Distributor curve

The HEI is a great distributor. That being said, you need the mechanical advance curve to come in quickly. Hopefully the Moroso weights allow this before 3000 rpm, the stock weights do not. You do need a stop screw as shown to limit the mechanical advance, grind as necessary to achieve your maximum advance. They all add extra timing in higher rpms. Just be careful when tapping the hole to keep the shavings out of the magnetic pick up. I went with the Mallory breakerless. I can set my base anywhere and with the lightest springs, all in just over 1500 rpm! I would try the lightest springs and see where your advance comes in with your dial back light. Give it a quick high rev, you will probably see an extra 3-5 degrees.

Sounds like at least someone else has actually done this correctly before, I agree, I do it a little different than you by using light springs to set the max total timing, then wire it closed to figure out the total advance curve. I have done my own stop screw on one of the junk Advance Auto dist. before when I first fired it there was almost 48 degrees mechanical advance in it. Doing that takes a while but can be done on the car with a dial type light. And I would love to ride with you guys in your cars when you can make the cap lift up on the spring hold downs, and spin on its own. Maybe you should use a magneto if your subjecting your car to retina detaching G-forces

Great advice from Olds307And403!

for an Olds 403 like yours, I'd recommend a total of 16 degrees mechanical advance all in at 3000 RPM. The base timing should be setup for 20-22 degrees.

do you not read English? I never said the caps spins, it can move and if you don't understand that after you finish laughing go out to your car and lift the hood, grab the cap in one hand and see how easy it is for the cap to rock.. .

Yes I read English, and yes I realize I can rock the cap with my hands. I can also pull the plug wires off, and pull the breathers out of the valve covers with even less effort than rocking the cap. So unless I get a stow-away under the hood of my car I should be fine.

Whoa, stay on topic guys. I appreciate the advice, i think i have my timing setup totally wrong. I'm just going to start from scratch tomorrow with the procedures you all have recommended. I'll let yall know how it goes

I think you mentioned it a while ago there is no place close to you that has a dyno but if I'm wrong it'll save you lots of time and you'll know for sure by the sheet what each set up gives you per rpm

Yeah i really wish there was a closer Dyno so i could get some serious help. If i was back home it's only a short drive to Savannah and there are some wicked speed shops around town. 9 more months to go and a Little more home sick every day :| , On the bright side i get to drive this rocket the wholeeee way there lol.

How is your idle? Any off idle stumbles? I would try for full advance as soon as possible.
