double humps vs. vortec

I've been watching this thread & I have a question. If I get some vortec heads I know I will need a new intake but my question is will the exhaust ports be the same as my stock heads or will i need new headers

the only problem with Vortecs is the rocker arm studs are prone to pulling out with a moderate-large cam. buy a set from a performance machine shop, might run a bit more but usually WELL worth it.
Or you could try http://www.kmjent.com/ cheap aluminum heads ( I would go with well built vortecs ).

I have never heard of that problem with the rocker arm studs...on our 602 crate we run heavier valve springs to prevent floating since we run the engines with a 6300 rpm chip and I have never heard of any complaints from the teams from the numerous divisions that run the 602 crates....

speaking from experience, with the small block stuff. My self and a lot of people around this area had that problem when we started using them for circle track. I would think that your 602 being a crate, if that were a problem in big blocks would have been taken care of before it left their shop. just saying.

the 602 heads on our crate are identical to what you buy off the shelf. I do know of one who has pulled a stud or two and break a few rockers but he is known to bend the rules and it's funny how his engine never hit the chip when all the others have until the last few laps of the race, if his engine survived..lol

If the studs are an issue I'd like to know since I run vortec heads on my street car and it's not a difficult job replacing them with screw in studs. I'll do some more checking and thanks for the heads up. For the 602 in the race car we are not permitted to modify the engine

well all the vortec heads out there or atleast most have around a .480ish .490 lift on stock studs. This is alright. But as far as all heads go, most will pull the studs because they are pressed in.

that is something I overlooked and the cost of screw in studs is cheap insurance for something that can leave you on the side of the road..... kudos to justwhisen for posting about it....

You could also use what they call a pin kit. Basically you drill a hole through the piece of cast that the stud is pressed into and through the stud to the other side of the cast, then you tap a dowel pin into the hole. :itchy: Which ever is right for you is the lesser of two evils.

sorry to necropost on this one but i found my vortecs in great shape for 150 bucks. This may be a dumb question but do i use a standard length pushrod?
