Well after the 26 mpg run, I have been rewarded with 21 and 23 mpg, second one with the distributor swapped. Had a good exhaust leak up front, was gutless and wasn't kicking down. I am pulling the plug on this experiment and stealing the cruise for my 70S, along with the rims and tires.

Well, I am not giving up yet. Turns out some horse's *ss didn't tighten the distributor down completely, probably retarded 10 to 15 degrees, would explain the horrible gutless behavior. So I still gained 2 mpg from the last trip and next trip I am adding 1.5" taller rear tires and slightly better trans line pressure. Plus I am down one Olds, got to love your children, check out the Olds Rat Rod thread.

If the distributor was not tightened down you might think you have developed an oil leak if you see drops of oil on the ground. I had a distributor not tightened down and it spewed out some oil.

Exhaust leak fixed and it now runs normal, still sucks but not as bad for power. I have never had an oil leak, knock on wood, on an Olds with the distributor slightly loose, actually didn't use any oil or anything. I even lost the inspection cover, I seem to be cursed but at least I made the 5 hour trip reasonably uneventful.

You're right there; prove the Pig project wrong!!
Let's hope so:). I am hoping taller tires dropping RPM will get me there. I think the hotter running temps should also help efficiency 185 to 210, I love a half plugged rad.

As you know this is my overactive imagination trying to make my turd of a car sound interesting. As you may know, I pulled the 1 5/8" primary Sanderson shorty headers and 2.5" compact X pipe exhaust with Hooker Aerochamber mufflers off my 88 Cutlass, I had it on the 260, it actually brought the 260 on par with a good running 307 and sounded amazing and only slightly loud. I put That exhaust on my 70S, it just doesn't sound as good. I plan on putting back on the mileage machine, to make the power more respectable, should be even better now that has a 2004R instead of a TH350 and hopefully help mileage will be better as well. I will be including pictures of my 88 as I do body work on the car.

Injesting cold air is good for power but not for milage. You should just use the stock air cleaner set up the way it was from the factory.

If you want a cold air setup, you should set it up to where it only opens at wot.

They are sweet, they would be very desirable if they were 15". Why Olds, when they were released in 1987 made them 14" is beyond me. I actually have the 14" steel wheels with 1970 poverty caps back on. I put those aluminums on my 70S with new 225/70R14 BFG's on the back to fill the big wheel wells. I plan on getting stainless trim rings and plan on painting the steelies body colour. Plus they have a taller 215/75R14 which will drop rpms to 1750 RPM at 60 mph.
