EGR system

my 85 cutlass has an EGR system and i was wondering if i really need it and if i could take it off

Why would you take it off? There's really nothing to gain...

EGR is used for better emission, lowering burning temp and getting better mileage on parts throttle.
on WOT it isn't funtional

the main reason i want to take it off is to get rid of some of the hoses and stuff under the hood

You will find that your engine is more susceptible to detonation without it. Leave it on there. There is no performance gain by removing it - plus then you have to cover the holes in the manifold.
