egr valve cleaning tips ? anyone

ok the egr valve on the cutlass i just picked up is in need of a good cleaning. i cant remember, whats the best solvent / method for cleaning one without screwing it up?

Is that the thing that the heater hose and a vacuum line connects to on the rear right side of the intake manifold?

Soak it in brake cleaner over night and give it a good scrub with wire brushes the next day. Make sure that if it has electric connectors not to get them in there. Or if you can get gm top cleaner from the dealer and soak it over night in that. It will eat away all the build up in it. Just lightly scrub the next day with wire brush.

sea foam works great. I belive if u run break cleaner in the motor it comes out the exhaust a toxic fume! deadly gas

All the repair books I have read state not to use any kind of solvent or cleaner on a EGR valve since it could damage the diaphragm. The proper way to clean a EGR valve is to tap the pintle with a soft face hammer, then vacuum it out.
