Engine won't idle

you said the problem started when you turned down the idle, have you tried turning the idle back up to see if it'll will run? If it doesn't I'd try a new coil

The camshaft is a lunati bracket master II it has 230 degrees duration at .050 lift and .480 lift on both intake and exhaust. It does cut off at 1800 or so rpm's Should I try the 5.5 power valve or go with a 4.5.

Thanks

4.5 might be too far. Your cam is just a bit "smaller" than the one I was dealing with so I think a 5.5 would be OK. You might try either Barry Grant or Holley tech support just to be sure. Have you hooked up a vacuum gauge to get an idea of what ballpark you're in? That might be helpful to the tech support guys

when I was on the phone, one of the many times with the demon guys, he said a 6.5 would probably be fine. I have not had the engine running at idle so I haven't got a read from a guage. I can always just hook one up and see what the reading is as I crank the engine. I have a good feeling you are right on since I was steared away from th vacuum secondary holley since it would have low vacuum. Also when I checked the plugs they all smelled like gas.

I tried a 4.5 and 3.5 power valve in the holley today. The engine still would not idle. It would still just fire a few cylinders than quit. I got it running at 2000 rpm and it ran like a champ and sounded great. Once it was running I brought it up to 3000 and checked the total timing and it was at 37 so I backed it down to 35. I had a vacuum guage on it as well and it was readding at 24 inches of vacuum. When I backed it back down to 2000 it was at 22 inches of vacuum. After it cut off when I tried to adjust it below the 1800 mark it cut off. I check a couple plugs and they were a little black. I tried to start is back at a normal idle and it would still just fire a few cylinders and then quit. I have all of the vacuum ports plugged in the carb. I am at a loss with what the issue could be.

Have you adjusted the idle mixture screws? If not, run them all the way in, then back them out 1 1/2 turns for a primary setting to get it running. Then adjust. In for leaner, out for richer.

The idle mixture screws are 1.5 turns out. I actually got the engine to idle at 500 rpm's which is good. At 500 rpm the engine has between 8 and 10 inches of vacuum. The 3.5 power valve is in the carb. The odd thing is that the timing is at 2 degrees after tdc, when I try to advance it or increse the idle the engine shuts off.

Man, I'm baffled. The timing thing(ATDC) is really weird. Have you verified your timing marks? There are 2 different timing cover/balancer combinations. One has the marks straight up(viewed behind the water pump) and one at the 2 o'clock position. I'm wondering if you might have a mismatch or possibly a balancer with a spun ring. It's important because if you can't dial in the timing no amount of carb tuning will make it run right.
You know what they say; if you think its fuel - it's spark, if you think it's spark - it's fuel  . Keep us posted.
