EPA Has New Rules

On the surface it looks to be related to tractor trailers, heavy duty "working" trucks/vehicles (dump trucks, construction equipment, etc.) delivery trucks, stuff like that.

The sky is not falling. Yet. Chill.

I agree. This is the key phrase from the FOX article: "Medium- and Heavy-Duty Engines and Vehicles".

Our vehicles, which pontiacgp suggests are being targeted, are LIGHT DUTY engines and vehicles.

I have no problem if you have a different opinion than mine, but let me at least tell you why I have mine. I live in Pittsburgh where steel manufacturing was the largest industry for the longest time. Pollution and smog from steel mills was so bad they used to turn street lights on around 1PM so you could see your way through the smog.

Those are actual pictures of downtown Pittsburgh. However once the steel industry left, the air has become remarkably clean. I don't believe most pollution comes from automobiles, I think it comes from manufacturing and industry. Here is Pittsburgh today on an average summer day-

Secondly, at least here in PA, only the most populous counties are subject to emissions testing. 42 out of 67 counties in PA don't require emissions. If I lived 2 miles north of where I currently do, I would not be subject to annual emissions testing. If emissions from cars were really that bad, wouldn't they require the test everywhere?

I'm not trying to get too far off topic here, but I'd at least like to justify my opinion.
I'm in Fayette county and we don't have emissions either. And if you drive under a certain mileage annually, you are exempt in other counties. My dad is in Washington county and he wants to pulls his cats off his zo6 because he says won't drive it enough to rack up many miles.

That's currently my plan. Washington county and other Pa emission counties have a 5000 mile wavier. My issue is you must go through a passing test in order to qualify for the waiver. So I must be a criminal and commit fraud to gain the passing test. Instead of offering a title resolution that allows hobbiest to title their vehicle as a "Street Rod" or whatever you would like to consider it. Pa has a title designated for "Hot rod" that must be manufactured before 1940?? Forget exact year. However classic and antique titles require the car to be 100% factory. No rims ,no cowls or custom paint. My point is at least in Pennsylvania either you spend 15/30 K on a 1930's vehicle to mod. Or a Pre-73 model that's pretty difficult to find here in the rust belt. Anything else your not "legally allowed to modify" . even the non-emission counties have a non tamper requirement built in to the state safety inspection. This is killing a hobby for further generations. In a land of hate and grievance your taking away a vital hobby. How many of us recall bonding with dad in the garage. Or taking our daughters out for a show? Sure I could of spent $800.00 on fishing gear, and simply drove my daughter around in our grandcherokee. But it should be my choice. Carbon footprints aside if the car is 30 years old and driven bi-weekly it should not be that detrimental. If you want to run a 1/4 mile with a gutted car. What's the exact tonnage of CO2 produced in 5/6 miles of heavy dragging per summer??? Now what's the tonnage of a 135lb resource manager driving a 2016 Yukon 80 Mile round trip commute with 50 minutes of stop and go traffic?? 5 days a week?? Bet its more. Silly to charge a hobbiest with excessive pollution compared with millions driving a excessive sized vehicle to carry one person to work. My rant sorry think we got enough god damn problems here than a drag car. How about every child go to bed with a roof and a full stomach before we tackel idiotic ideas.

if your dad takes the cats off of his Z06 I think you should do your public duty and confiscate his car..🙂

After reading this I'm changing my position.

It looks like the usual trojan horse deal, slip something into something that's stated to be about something else. Time-honored tradition in DC.

Oh, and don't count on any kind of "grandfather" provision. Nor any kind of "state control." If the EPA enacts this, states must comply unless they get a waiver from the EPA. They can go beyond the EPA, like they do here in California, but EPA is the minimum, the baseline that states must meet.

There are practical limits, of course. States that don't have emission controls are supposed to enforce the anti-tampering stuff, but do they really? But then again, racing events are public gatherings, and it would be easy enough to stroll around having a look at people's cars .... 😱

Believe me the EPA talk more than they are action - very strict on what's coming out of the factories where they can levy fines and penalties and then - they still don't have anything in place to test the big rigs when they should be looking at these so called grandfathered trucks throwing out charcoal briquettes

I totally agree. But to Target vehicles rarely driven I don't understand. Really a converted monte dirt track car. How many actual miles are driven per year? What is the end result?
