exhaust system

whats up guys, I want to quiet my exhaust up a bit. I am currently running headers 1 3/4 to a 3in collector long tubes to true dual 2 1/4 exhaust with no cross pipes to flowmaster 40 mufflers then out the back to 3 inch exhaust tips. motor is a 383 stroker in a Malibu wagon, has a mutha thumpr cam. I want to quiet it down a bit, but still here a little rumble and my cams sound. any suggestions? thank you

I would say the first thing I would do is add a balance tube since this can be done relatively easily since you only need to cut a section from each side of your current exhaust and they sell kits with straight and bent tubes included to clear the driveshaft.
You could also try an X-pipe set up but they are a little more involved setting up and to gain the proper clearances since they take up more room in your exhaust system and usually it is better to build an exhaust around the X-pipe set up instead of trying to add it later.

I would try balancing the exhaust flow first and see how it does with your existing Flowmasters, it should help smooth out the exhaust note and if it is still too loud you can try different mufflers that will fit in there place or possibly a longer quieter muffler if it will fit.

So if i was to add a balance tube to my exhaust is there a certain distance back from the collectors an what all will that do beside make it sound different ?

I had Flowmaster Super 44's on my car. I liked how they sounded, buuut they had a lot of interior drone. They were also obnoxiously loud. :lol: So I traded them out for some Thrush Turbo's. I am 100% happy with them. Nice mellow performance tone, but I can carry on a conversation inside the car when cruising. I actually just put headers on my car, and Im about to get my exhaust redone. So I purchased a pair of Dynomax Super Turbos. They are supposed to "flow" better. But I think you should look into turbo mufflers.

Typically you want a balance tube as close to the header collectors as possible but the reality is there are many factors that limit a specific placement and it just comes down to where it will actually fit.
There is a theory that you can mark a crayon on the exhaust pipe and at the end of the spot where it burns off is the best location for the balance tube.
With mine clearance around the trans pan and low ground clearance for the car pretty much dictated where the tube would go.
