So, it seems like you can be afflicted by it regardless of age. I do recall my mom getting it many years ago. What actually causes it?
I was always under the understanding that stress was a contributing factor.

I thought you had to have had chickenpox to get shingles at an older age.....

Here is what I know about it, keep in mind I'm a mechanic not a doctor.

It's thought (but not confirmed) to be a result of a weakened immune system, which happens to people as they age, but can occur at any age. That's why you usually see it in older people, but not always. Stress doesn't directly cause shingles, but stress does weaken the immune system, so they go hand in hand.

Talked to my mom and here's what she told me about the Shingrix vaccine-

It is now the preferred vaccine over Zostavax.
It is not a live virus.
It is given in two doses.
Everyone over the age of 50 should get it, even if you already received Zostavax.
You should get it even if you already had shingles.
You cannot get it while you currently have shingles, but you can receive it after the shingles has cleared up.
It is supposed to be over 97% effective.

Hope this helps someone.

Thank you for that explanation, Joe.
That was very informative and makes a lot of sense.
Why I actually thought it was stress related was that when my mom had gotten it, my dad was going thru a serious health related issue. I think it had put undue stress on her at the time.

My shingles episode started when I was about 40. Noticed a line of pimples making a circle on my left side. Itchy but did not hurt. Luckily caught it early and was given some meds by the doctor to treat it. Took months to clear up.

Others I have known had shingles on their scalp and face and it was painful. They were both in their 60’s and suffered until it started to ease up.

So tc1959 hang in there. Hope you get better soon and wishing you a quick recovery.

Having Chicken Pox as a kid causes it.
