Factory 3.42 rear axle?

Maybe the shop meant you can’t change gears with your current setup, 3.08 is the steepest gear that works for a 2 series carrier, would need to change to a 3 series if I’m correct. But the rear housing itself is irrelevant to this.

I concur. I put 3.23's in my Malibu and had to switch to a 3 series carrier.

Quick web search reveals S10's could have as low as a 4.10 gear with 7-5/8" rear? Don't know if they made another "series" jump. i.e. "4-series"

there is an early 4wd 1st gen blazer in the junk yard with 4.10s

I was under the impression that the 2 series carriers went up to and including 2.56 and 3 carriers were 2.73 and above.

D'oh! Wait a minute. 7.5 had 3.08 and down gear for the 2 series. The above is for 8.5".

There is a 4-series carrier for early 70s A-body 12-bolts when using 3.90 and up gears. Not sure about O axles or corporate axles.
