Looking to change the fan clutch on my 85 monte ss. I have a built 350 with the original fan and a bigger radiator. Does anyone have any suggestions or comments? Maybe any tips? Thanks in advance.

You need the fan, a relay. You also need a switch, either one that you operate or one that runs off of a coolant temp switch. The coolant temp switch will turn the fan on whenever the engine reaches a certain temp. You should be able to buy one for the engine. Not sure where it would go or if there is a spot on the engine.

a HD clutch and a 7 or 9 blade fan does the trick just as well, unless you need that couple extra horses. It definitely makes a bit more noise 8)

I would go electric.
Free up some power.
Kits are not that expensive but you can save a few bucks by getting one from the wreckers and hooking it up to a relay.
Can usually just zip tie it to the rad if you need to.
Best thing I ever did on my truck was get rid of that heavy hp robbing clutch fan.

Do you have a/c?

I agree with GP 403.

Hard to beat a proper clutch fan set up on a street car.

Having the schroud is also very important.

Is it a street car?

Use the stock stuff with Hayden HD thermal clutch.

As far as hp gain, a clutch will free wheel with rpm AND cool air.

So if you are cool and moving there is minimal drag,if any.

2 tenths in the 1/4 mile when I took it off my truck.
It may free wheel when cool but the engine still has to drag that weight around.
