actually the machinest screwing up may be a good thing.. the old school double hump heads are not very good. they were good 30 yrs ago but tech has come very far. IIRC the vortec were based off of a "special" corvette head known for power. so they probably flow quite a bit better than the double humps.
From what I've read, you are correct. The Vortecs are supposed to flow better, but my fueling issues are stopping me from seeing it...
If I get this carburetor issue ironed out, I'll be sure to report my findings back...
