First time wagon owner intro

Quinn,

I don't know, but I can't imagine that an S10 box will be very accommodating. It really pushes the lever forward. If a guy uses the bell housing for the canted IROC T5 no mount modifications are necessary. If using the 606 cover, then yes, the mount will be at the eighteen degree offset the bell housing compensated for. I may be going over a cliff here but I'm using the Canted T5 with the IROC bell housing and don't know yet what the mechanics will be when I screw it all together.

When I had it test fit in the car it looked like everything lined up, but that's from an old eyeball view. Really not sure why the 606 has the offset ball stud location in the bell housing and the funky geriatric looking clutch release bearing lever. Maybe someone with intimate knowledge (tried it and has the scars to prove it) can chime in. ...

Oh, and by the way Scott, that's a pretty nice piece you picked up. Seems like the cars I build always need everything. ...

Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread. ... :hijack:

Hard to say but my guess is that someone had the seat(s) recovered. Usually the seats match the door panels and plastic surround trim. Either way, looks good, at least you can drive it. All I can do is think about driving mine. ...

Yeah, I'd like to keep the bench seat, which was recently recovered. Fortunately I have long legs so I usually keep the seat all the way back. So it would be less likely to interfere with a stick, if and when.

ssbrewskyaz, I saw some of your IROC wagon thread. Looks like some pretty detailed restoration you're doing. I tried restoring the interior plastic trim on my old malibu a while back. It was in such bad shape I had to sand paper it down in spots due to drying out of the surface. Then I used some kind of plastic stainer from autozone.

Sorry about your postponements in the car project, Quin. We gotta have our priorities I guess. Maybe in the future. I've only done one engine and trans change out in my life. It was a remanufactured turbo 350 and crate 350 in my last malibu. I put a 1991 z28's TPI in it though. It turned out to be a headache maintaining with sensors going bad, causing all kinds of crazy symptoms. The trouble code reader wasn't much help. Now I'm a firm believer in the KISS philosophy.

I went the other way. I bought the top half of a Ram Jet 350 and the harness /MEFI4 brain a few years back and built the short block from parts to match the build sheet. Saved about $2200, but the block is in a dusty bag on the engine stand and the heads are still in boxes. Soon, though. New fuel tank and the Astro fuel sender is en route from RockAuto. I am now looking for a 200-4R.

Hey man I got a 200R4 length driveshaft if you end up needing one I'll make you a good deal, I got a TH400 conversion that I'm not going to use and the TH400 and 200R4 use the same length driveshaft.

I got the tachometer installed. It's working but idling at 2,500-3,000 rpms. The back of the tach doesn't have a switch to go between 6 or 8 cyl like some do. I believe it's hardwired for v8 only but needs calibrating. Look at the picture of the tic tac clock above, maybe someone can verify that for me. The back of the tach has a hole that I think provides access to a calibration screw. Haven't peeked inside yet though.

Scott,
I took apart an old Monte cluster (with tic toc tac) after I read your thread and could not see anywhere to make an adjustment for 6-8 cyl. I have seen it on other tachs where there was a small switch. I was expecting to either find a switch or strap, but neither was evident. As you stated, they must have been calibrated for 8 cyl only. I also could not find a calibration screw.

The hole I was thinking about was actually on the clock. My bad. I just checked.
But I think I read on the El Camino forum that some tachs do have some way of dialing them in, like a calibration screw

Just had an epiphany. I might just need a tach adapter. The car has an electronic ignition now, non points, so it might be outputing a different signal pulse, thus not be compatible with the old factory tach. Make sense?

I don't believe any of these cars were built with a point style ignition. I wanna say 73 or 74 was the last year for that stuff. ...
