This is my first time posting over here but have really enjoyed reading a lot of your articles. I'm in the middle of doing an engine transplant on my 86 el camino and while it was down I decided to buy a new ford 9" rear kit from Quick performance. I've got everything together and it looks great but I'm running into a problem with the interaction of the axle retainer bracket, sealed axle bearing and Housing plate at the end of the housing. I was told by quick performance that the bearing should protrude 1/8" beyond the housing and that is normal. Also that I should just go to my local hardware store and buy 1/8" washers to shim it out and the reason for it I'm going with disc brakes and the ford 9" was originally designed to work with a drum and what is missing is the thickness of the original bracket that holds the drums on. Looking at many aftermarket brake kits they all appear to supply you with this shim, but none of them are willing to sell me one I've asked. What have you done in this situation? Have any of you had this problem before? I found out that you can order different thickness washers from grainger so I have that option if all else fails. But that being said how thick should they actually be to make them fit properly or should I use a feeler gauge after snugging the bolts down to find a good side then go up a 2 or 3 thousandths if I can get them that fine. Here is a pic of what I'm looking at for a gap if that helps. Thank you for all of your help in advance.

I also purchased a rear from them with the same set up. I just put the lock washer in gap it. I don't believe it is right, but it will be done the right way once I take it to a shop. The people at Quick Performance tried to explain it to me, but I still did not understand. I hope you find a fit. Also can you let me know once you find out?

I will let you know what I find out. I've got calls into a couple of ford hot rod shops and buddies who race fords so when I hear something back from them I'll let you know too. I called QP back and they told me to use a lock washer inbetween to help hold them apart while you tighten it all up. I did find a photo on another forum of one guy who took an old drum brake backing plate and cut out what he needed to make a shim. Wish I could find the thickness of this I'd just buy a piece of steel that thickness and make my own. I'm very surprised that this is apparently a common problem and they aren't really addressing it. The QP rearend and axles etc. are beautiful but this is a little silly that they want you to macgyver this bit.

I believe the backing plates are 16 gauge steel which is 1/16"

I just tightened it down till the two plates touched. Never had any problems

Easy fix, keep your GM car all GM ....Sorry, had to do it

I know, and I figured I would get ribbing about it at some point. HEHE. So far the consensus has been to find washers with a few thousandths of the gap left. So that is what I'm looking for atm.

Re: Ford 9" Rearend in my 86 elky Missing a shim or somethin

Just a long past due update on this. I tried to use the lockwashers that came with the t bolts and they were too thick. I found some washers at my local hardware store that were grade 8 and very close to the thickness I needed but just a little bit under. After talking with enough ford guys I decided a small amount of crush "in the thousandths" would be acceptable and hold it in place well so that was my solution.
