hello i have a freshly rebuilt 350 with vortec heads,260 degree comp cam, holley 600,aftermarket hei distrib - try to start and just a few little pops (not backfiring) it has spark and gas but when i pull the plugs some are wet and some aren't - is this a timing chain placement issue or something else?

Could be the chain. Could also be the distributor is 180 deg off.

the only settings on the chain (cloyes 3 key way) were factory,2deg ret and 2 deg adv - if it was on the wrong one shouldnt it still start if its only 2 deg off?

X 2.
If you lined up the gears properly on the timing chain and still no fire but you do have fuel and spark then you need to

A: re-check your firing order & wires
B: rotate the engine over unitl cyl # 1 is TDC
C: pop your distributor back in so when it meshes with the oil pump and drops into place the rotor should be facing the proper terminal on the cap which relates to cyl # 1 ( be patient as this may take a few tries with a friend cranking the motor over by hand

that should get you close enough so that you can move your distributor at the base to set the timing once you get it to fire.

When you put the timing gears on and lined up the 2 dots did you then rotate the crank again so the top gears dot was up along with the bottom one to get the cyl 1 top dead center?

get the engine to TDC on the compression stroke and check where the distributor/rotor are along with you wires.

i removed the valve covers and some rockers were loose - went through sequence again and retightened - still no go so i checked rockers again and there were some loose again - removed pushrods and i think two of them have very slight bends in them - could i have damaged anything else (i.e. heads, pistons lifters etc?) it sounded smooth turning i over and wasn't turned over very much - i believe you guy's were right and the timing chain gear(s) are off 180 deg - hopefully i can swap those and she'll fire up - i just don't want to damage anything else

just wondering if you turned the oil pump to remove any air and to make sure the pump was pumping oil before you tried to start the engine....

You should definately consider priming the engine before you go any further. That will help to make sure everything is coated in oil before you start it. They sell adapters that go into a drill. You remove the distributor and use the drill to turn the oil pump. Also you don't want to over tighten the rockers until you get it running and know the lifters have filled with oil.
