Front Load washing machines - what brand to buy?

On our Whirlpool the computer failed. From what the repairman explained, 8 times out of ten it's the computer that goes bad. He said it's not really anything you can prevent. We always use the HE soaps, but I have no idea if or how that affects the longevity of the machine.

Guys, thanks for entertaining me with this. Washing machines have a motor and moving parts right? A lot of engineering goes into these things. I appropriately put the thread in non G body forum 😎

Check this out....actually made be laugh. This is the leading failure with all brands

1) Don't use too much soap ( only1 to 2 tea spoons)
2) Use HE soap
3) Hard water with heavy mineral deposits will kill a washer quick

We have had a LG front load washer and matching dryer for about a year. The LG stuff is quiet and works well, when it works. We went through 3 LG dishwashers through extended warranty at 2 years, then another the next. This one was the ultra fancy stainless model, it has to be at least two years old now. A PIA as we got stuck with a bogus charge at the end. BUT it is ridiculously quiet an cleans extremely well. The washer has had 0 issues and has a ton of features and no smell if you leave the door open. All this stuff is made overseas, go with the one with the best reviews and most features for your money.

You can get around the washer's tendency to mildew over time by not latching the door after you use it. Some designs already intentionally have a catch there where it is just touching the seal but not closed so the seal can dry.

We won't own another set though. I started buying extended warranties on everything just because they are all just disposable crap anymore and are just about guaranteed to break a couple months after the warranty is up. I just bought an entire new kitchen and went GE Profile this time and have had 2 failures already, one fridge and one range. Both warranty repairs and have the 3 extra years beyond that for at least some peace of mind. Sad thing is, they are only designed to have a 5 year product life these days. But more than that is, despite their claims and even some highly questionable test results to the contrary, my wife and I agree that the front load washer does NOT clean better. They do use less water which I think is why they don't clean better but that's just me. And, heavy loads especially on the pedestals are guaranteed to rattle your floor trusses until the ball bearings finally all get positioned where they need to be to counterweight the load. Combined with their cost? We are going back to top load when our LGs are toast.

Oh, but they do look really important though . . . 👍

I get whatever brand and type that my wife wants - following this system seems to keep me from having to use it. All appliance/houseware items get purchased with the same idea in mind. She doesn't tell me what kind of lawnmower/tractor to buy and I don't tell her what dish washer to buy.

Happy wife, happy life - it's not just a saying - it's the gospel in my house. Worked just under 25 years so far - I'm sticking with it 🙂🙂🙂

The new LG direct drive front loaders have a 10 year warranty. The great thing when a big company makes things that are are bad is they set up a repair network and when then finally make something good, it lasts longer and can be readily fixed.

Our Repairman recommended the newest LG's because they fixed the initial problems, offer a long warranty and set up a support network/sell spare parts.

My wife and I needed a new washer a couple years back. Instead of a front loader, we got this Samsung top loader that is essentially the same as the front loader. It doesn't have the agitator tower, but the center of the drum spins separate from the outer ring upon startup to determine the weight of the load, water capacity needed, time of cycle, etc.

Knock on wood, but it's been a great machine so far!!!! I would've taken an inside pic, but it's running right now lol!View attachment 82681

Sure a top loader is superior in every way (unless you are a short and like matching socks), but you can't stack **** on top of it. What good is a laundry room unless you can stack **** everywhere?

While I do agree with 90% of these sentiments, I also like to eat and, occasionally, wear clean clothes (to both of which I must be self reliant, at times). Therefore, I earn the right to challenge her on her hairbrained decisions.
