Why do these exist? What drives someone to put huge wheels, like 30" wheels, on a car?

Everybody needs their own "car culture" they can Identify with (lowriders, ricers, etc. were already taken) and it serves a practical purpose when the storm drain pumps stop working in you neighborhood (without having resort to driving a "redneck" 4X4).

Why BIG SHINY WHEELS
Why 1500HP, BLOWN HEMI
Why STRETCHED TIRES, EXCESSIVE CAMBER and FART CAN EXHAUST

ANSWER---Because you like it!

I think its actually more about "tribes" than whether or not an individual likes something. Its more of a Dallas Cowboys/Philadelphia Eagles/New England Patriots thing. Your tribe likes something, so you like something.

Shiny objects and going fast transcends tribes, its natural for animals to want those. Desire for things like "patina", "matching numbers", "rat rod", etc. is tribal.

G-bodys are a blank canvas and can be accepted into a bunch of different tribes.

Better they are into something silly which reduces performance like donks than be into technicals. However, how safe those donks are is pretty questionable. Between increased stresses, changes in geometry, changes in center of gravity, etc.

Well if you're talking about real donks... do some research. Most of highly modified ones are frame off restomods, with tubs, narrowed, boxed frames, custom suspension setups, full huge disc brake set ups, etc. These guys put more money and time in to these cars than imaginable for most car enthusiasts. They are hands down typically better built, and safer than a lot of "traditional" builds.

Here is a couple more donks. Notice, no big rims? Yes, they are donks because that is the name referring to the body style.

Here is Dallas last Sunday night:

Left hand donuts and 9mm's.

That bullshit gives all of us a bad rep. Moron almost shot his buddy and definitely gave him some hearing damage, and looks like a bunch of stock ex police cars and high school kids.

The news this week in Dallas every night for 1/2 the newscast has been about protests of a confederate monument at a former confederate cemetery (I never heard that fact mentioned once - I stumbled across the monument years ago taking a shortcut through a park, said "WTF?" saw the headstones surrounding it and went "oh, that makes sense") and with 3/4 of the Dallas police force is on riot control, the other 385 square miles of Dallas are pretty much lawless.

The police note there was not one call to the police during the whole donut and gunfire melee, so everyone seemed to be enjoying it and no police were needed, anyway.

At least Dallas isn't a ****hole like Chicago or Baltimore and people are still happy and have jobs, pay low taxes and don't hate enough to point their guns at other people, yet. It's headed that way, however, and more employers will likely flee rising crime Dallas for the suburbs, taking jobs with them, and Detroitification could set in.

After the Confederate monument stories there was a story on south Dallas being a "Food Desert" with no grocery stores. If your pharmacy is always being robbed at gunpoint, the cars in your parking lot are always being broken into or stolen (thieves know when a lady with two kids goes into a grocery store, they have at least 30 minutes to steal all they can from the car), and your parking lot becomes gunfire and car stunts every weekend after dark, grocery stores aren't keen to open your neighborhood. duh.
