Yes if you spin one tire and the other spins with it in the same direction then it is a posi.

how do you know it's 3.42 gears if you have never opened it up? If the two wheels spin it may be an open carrier that has it's gears locked up or someone may have welded the spider gears together.

Nah not bragging haha I just keep needing reassurance on everything I doubt myself to much and I bought it a few months back. And the guy I bought off of had it in a regal it has 4:11's in it right now and the code on the axle is gu6(I think) 3tp everything I looked up says 8.5 3:42 he gave me a new set of 3:42 gears.

I did not find the $400 GN axle - mine cost more, and was one-legger. Now I have several choices. I can keep the 3.42s in it and add a 28-spline 10-bolt posi I have in a truck axle. I can get 3.73s or 3.23s. I can use the Auburn posi that takes 30-spline axles and buy the 30-spline axles. Which direction to pour money? I'll be using it behind a Tremec with 2.87 first and 0.64 fifth gears. The three ratios I describe yield 9.27, 9.81 or 10.71 total first gear multiplication. I'm kind of leaning toward the higher two ratios. The jump from 1.00 4th to 0.64 fifth is a big one.

I didn't find it either I just got lucky and put a ad on Craigslist and some guy that needed money to move had it he also had a few 9's for like $500-$600. I really wasn't trying to brag or anything everything I read on the codes are back and forth one forum will say that the 8.5 gu6 3TJ code is posi and the next will say the 8.5 gu6 3TP is the posi one so I figured I'd post on here and see what answers I can get. I read up on that too I was gonna get 3:73's cause imma use a TCI 200-4R but right now budget is a little tight so imma stick with 3:42's and then maybe later on jump up to 3:73s

OK. Now you can brag. Knowing what you were looking for, making the right search, having the cash in hand, and jumping on that opportunity before it got away, now that is how you earned an 8.5 Gbody axle!
