Have a turbo 350 right now, B&M shift kit 2000 stall and a 2.29 rear end gear. I have either enough money to buy and do up a 700R4/200R4, or I can do my gears and a posi. My question is has anybody ran a th350 with lower gears? And if so what s the point where it becomes unstreetable. I am considering between a 3:08 and a 3:73 (yes I have tooken into account for the carrier break). Has anybody ran a th350 wih these gear ratios and if so is it streetable?
Thanks
Justin

How streetable a car is with steep gearing is a matter of personal preferance. Personally, I can't stand driving a car with steep gearing without OD.

I have had 3.42 gear 3.73 gears and 4.10 gears with a th350 in my opinion 3.42 are the best all around gear anything more your rpms are up. Most guys complain them gears are to much but i drove my old cutlass supreme around all day got 15 mpg and car still pulled a 12.60 in the qt all day.

I was running 3.73 in my elky with a 350 and 235/60-15 (26" tall tire) 3200 rpm on the hiway. I wouldn't recomend those gears if you do alot of hiway driving, however zipping around town was great 8) which is what i normally do anyway. Now if you can only do 1 thing right now I would prolly do gears as long as there no problems with with transmission, OR you could keep saving and do both at once, maybe find a doner car. 😀

I would do the gears first. As for the choice of ratio. I've been using 3.08 gears with a TH 350. I needed something that had a good combination for highway and street. I was running 3.42's, which are great for mostly street cruising without overdrive.
The 3.42's were buzzing the engine a little too high for my liking.
I was able to cruise the interstate @ 80 mph, @ 3200 rpm. With the 3.08's and a 27" tire, I was able to run @ 2800 rpm @ 80 mph.
I plan on swapping the TH 350 out with a 200-4R, and then change the gears to 3.42.

Thanks for the fast replies! I think I'm going to look into getting a set of 3:08's. What kind of car had those gears in it?

For gears....check ebay. Seriously. There's a guy in California that sells nothing but rear end parts. He rebuilds differentials too.

I paid right under $200 for a rebuilt limited slip auburn unit and 3.23's (ring and pinion). IMO, it's well worth buying something for a decent price rather than pulling it for few bucks less.

Do you mean what car I have those gears in currently, or what kinds of cars generally had those gears in them?
I currently have 3.08's in my wagon.

What car and engine are you running?

I was wondering what kind of G-bodies came with those gears in them, as I would just take the whole back diff. Right now I am running a 1984 cutlass supreme
sbc 350 with
Edelbrock E street heads
Comp cams 12-210-2 cam
Roller tip rockers
Hooker headers
And a built up turbo 350 with a 2000 stall
