Getting the F' Outta Dodge.

.270Win .308 .30-06 .243 for standard calibers you can't go wrong.
.243 would be a great starter cartridge the wife and soon enough girls could easily shoot.

After 17 years in the Army I am pretty certain Natasha can handle any weapon I can. We've spent a lot of time on the range and her abilities are notable. I know you didn't mean anything negative... I just need to say this or she beats me.

#justiceforjohnny... err... motorhead

I appreciate the insight. I just want to get into something that will fit and perform well - I will most definitely be the limiting factor.

The meat behind the trigger is normally the issue with any shot I have missed. Expect that one time..... Fast and flat shooting is your friend out in your neck of the woods.. for obvious reasons.

A pump action shotgun has always had an appeal to me. It pretty universal for blasting crap.
Remington 870 or Mossberg 590 seem to be the go-to for a first pump action 12ga. I rocked a Stevens 350 for ages though, and Browning sells a nicer version of it still I believe. I do have a Churchill/Canuck/Derya (all came from the same place, Turkey) pump gun that has been quite nice for the money too, I've used it to shoot skeet and it's never given me trouble, currently there seems to be lots of them available in Canada. I'd suggest that if you want to be able to shoot birds or other small critters and keep it around for "other purposes" you try to get a field/defense combo that comes with both a long (24"+) barrel and a short (16" or less) barrel. It's way cheaper to go this way than to try to find a shorter barrel later for the most part. Also, removable chokes for the long barrel are nice.

For legal reasons I would never say on a forum (or anywhere recorded) that you might need it for the 2 legged variety of animals. These comments have been brought up in court to try to prove premeditation of murder. Which does lead to another thing, I now carry a mag fed 12ga (Canuck Recon) most of the time in the woods, because I can leave the magazine loaded but out to mostly comply with stupidity. Or I carry a very short lever action 44 mag, and just got fast at loading and unloading it, but that's if I carry anything. Last year the bears were bad, had lots of maulings in my area, so I was carrying.

Deer mostly. People if needed.

I would like a responsible/effective rifle for hunting.

I will echo Cauterize. .270win, 308win, 30.06
You will find ammo everywhere for cheap, they aren't sexy but they get it done on everything short of NWT buffalo and bullet/load selection is massive. Both my hunting rifles are cheap savage package rifles that were under $500 each with optic, i spin on a match barrel and am in under $800CAD for a sub 3/4 moa (0.7mil) hunting rifle. Under 250yrds they all you need.

12ga. You need 3. Rem 870 or Mossberg 500/590. Stock up on #2 high brass and #7.5 target.

I'll add a Marlin 45/70 GBL. Throwing AA battery sized lead and turning cover into concealment for 150 years. Also works as a .410 shotgun in a pinch.

I would trade .243 for 7mm-08 or 260rem, but solid advice.

Is anybody left handed/left eye dominant? If everyone is the same, they can be handed down. Start with something that can get your job done and could be handed down or used to introduce the kids. Then if you decide you'd like something different, the first one can still be utilized.

Guns can be like cars.......

Have you watched the TV series of Evil dead? Perfect way to kill a few evenings.

Have you watched the TV series of Evil dead? Perfect way to kill a few evenings.

Years ago I started it, just didn't get hooked. Should revisit it. Same with the Walking Dead... that enraged me after half an episode.

Originally there were 2 seasons, now there's 3.

Had a dude come by with the honey truck to pump our septic tank, turns out he's a car guy and invited us to a car show this weekend in our small town.

How awesome is that?

I love it here.
