I have signed up for my PAL/Hunter Safety course next weekend.

Gotta get my paperwork in and a firearm on the move next. Any recommendations?

Would depend on your intended target. You have on average larger big game animals than we do down here.

308 is a pretty flexible round. Shouldn't be to hard to attain shells. If you want to get into reloading next, there are tons of options in that chamber.

I also like that it is a military round. Makes it a little harder to ever become obsolete.

Better hurry before your boy bans hunting rifles too.

Something bolt action in a "normal" caliber. So the 308 Win suggestion is good, 30-06 is still super common and does about the same thing. I'd make the rest of the choice based on budget and preferences. Cheap? Savage Axis or whatever. More expensive, Browning A-Bolt, Remington 700, Tikka, Sako, etc. If you just want to go reallllllllly cheap there is literally no reason a sporter Lee-Enfield can't do 95% of everything, and the 303 British is still a super common cartridge. All the natives seem to use them or the SKS, and they can't all be wrong.

Edit, also if you have not been to canadiangunnutz that's where you want to be. Sign up for the equipment exchange access.

Got Tatiana to help me do rock recovery.

Should be enough to get started, and there are more where these came from. Don't want to be accused of having "small stones". 😉 Now I just have to choose a spot and a design. Been looking a lot at smokeless options.

In other news we bought some broad leaf herbicide, the kind of stuff not available in other provinces. We are trying Par III: https://www.lovelandproducts.ca/product/par-iii®-turf

Initially I figured I could get by on a 15L backpack sprayer for the rock gardens and touch ups around the main use areas... But upon further inspection I figured a more deliberate application tool would be prudent. So I ordered a 15 gallon broadcast spray setup:

Surprisingly not much more expensive than the back pack. And now I can do fertilizer too.

Let's get back to guns and hunting!
