GM Planning to Close Oshawa Assembly

I'll admit I NEVER have seen a ad for the Volt or Bolt,

GM lost a sale on a Bolt to my brother due to sheer ignorance on their part. Basically they failed to build and deliver the car before the tax incentives ran out in Ontario - then gave him the "take it or leave it" attitude. He left it - laughing as he walked off the lot.

Hell I've seen more Demon & Bill Goldburg Santa commercials

Hold the phone! Is Goldberg doing commericals dressed as Santa while driving a Demon?! Because I would need to see that. Now.

To their peril, all these companies who kept pushing the higher priced SUV's and trucks and shying away from making cars are simply reacting to their own seed-sewing. They got the mindless Millennials to accept that an SUV or truck is the most versatile mode of transportation ever, while able to charge more for it by jamming in stupid crap that really doesn't matter, like "connectability". While it may be a good safety feature, who gives a rat's *ss about 5G and streaming, really?

Not going to get political here, but IMO, the govt. needs to stay OUT of GM's plans to do what they want to as a company. Yeah, you can always hang the bailout stick over their heads, but if the government tried to master building cars, they would screw that up too. Let GM do whatever they want to do. But....if they fail....they fail. Don't bail out any more "private" companies. Regardless of size. No pain, no gain. You can't learn from your mistakes if you're constantly not allowed to fail now and then.

I remember in the 80s, a truck was a truck for stuff a truck does. And they weren't all that expensive comparatively. Now a friggin' Suburban is easy over 60K and rides as good as a car for the most part.

Of course, what kind of car do you make? What's going to happen to all the car rental companies? Their full size car is now a Cruze or Camary. It's still a compact car to me. Now they will only rent Chargers, Mustangs, and Camaros as those are the only cars left?

When gas prices shoot up and stay up again, and they will, people will be flocking to...….um...…..Hybrids? Electric? Hahaha. Gotcha you stupid unsuspecting sheeple!

BC they're not in the business of selling cars anymore, their business is selling financing. The car is just a vehicle (NPI) for that. "I need a ride to work and I can only spend $N a month" *$$$$$ eyes appear* "I think we can do that." (laughs maniacally internally as they write up a 8 year loan)

Also kudos for keeping this more or less politics free so far.

And that's a good point. Dealers won't turn you away if you want to pay cash on a car, but I have read of many instances where you get a better deal if you take financing from the dealer rather than cash offer or financing through your own bank.

Dealers make more money on low mile trade-ins that they can lowball by falsifying "we're giving you a GREAT deal on the new car" and then give a quick buff and tire shine and stick on the lot 2 days later for 8 grand over what they paid. They can make 5 grand on a tradein they paid 15g for by selling it for 20g, vs maybe 2g on a 28g car the sell for 30g because everyone shops around.

Most people would get a better deal buying that 15g car from a private seller and getting a personal car loan through their bank but most people don't know you can get loans for cars not sold at dealers.

Yep they are making the exact same mistake that caused them to go bankrupt last time. Putting all their eggs in one basket (trucks and SUVs) and when gas prices go up again (it's a matter of time) nobody is gonna want to buy a gas guzzler.

But at least their cars have wifi, God knows what we would do without that...

While I was born in 1978 I do not identify as a Millennial (my gender is: curmudgeonly *******) - no matter how triggered I feel right now. Yet, we own a coupe, station wagon, SUV (one actually built on a truck chassis), a "mid-size" pick-up. Lots of convenience built into two of those for the family. But, it things like handsfree, butt heaters, and USB chargers that are the difference makers for us.

That is how we got our TBSS, and I am banking on scooping up a widebody Hellcat on the same principle. Hurray for depreciation lead market adjustment!

OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG!

Something my wife and I both would want to find with a bow on it under the tree on Christmas morning.

Yeah... yeah... have fun with Bill... I am going for a drive.

I used to work at the Detroit/Hamtramck plant about 10+ years ago. I was just a temp, but I made about $21 per hour for working in quality.

I've never purchased a new car, but GM blew it with me once they stopped producing full-size/SUV's with performance in mind. They completely gave that market to FCA. I can't say that I wouldn't try to purchase the Cadillac CT6 once the price comes down more.
