I'm needing a pick up truck and been thinking about getting an 80's model s10. Will that 9bolt fit up under one?

The BW 9 Bolt is decent, but their posi units are known to be problematic because of wear/abuse and improper set up... most of their posi units tend to require a rebuild past 65K miles if abused or w/ +250hp

Here's a break-out of the rear axles:
'82 -'85 F Body: 7.5" ring gear, GM "Corporate" 10 bolt axle
'86 -'92 F-Body: used a 7.625" ring gear, GM "Corporate" 10 bolt axle
'85 -'89 Iroc-Z and WS6 Trans Am '87-'89 Formula: 7.75" ring gear, Borg-Warner 9 bolt axle (includes B4C police package Camaro and 1LE Camaro/Firebird)
'1983/'84 -'92 GM Heavy Duty Service Replacement: 8.5" ring gear, Dana Corp 44, 10 bolt axle*
--Considered the Holy Grail of 3rd Gen rear axles. Typically sell for +$1000 in "as found/used condition", none are known to still exist in GM, Dana, or SLP inventories..
*also was Stock Axle for '91 & '92 Firehawks
**was available via GM Performance Parts
***SLP bought up the remaining GM inventory in 1996
1993-2002 F-Body: 7.625" ring gear, GM "Corporate" 10 bolt approx. several inches wider than a 3rd Gen axle, but is a direct swap... improved rear disc brake design/wider rear foot print for slightly better sideways control.

Anyone reading this.. Next time you hit the boneyards, look at those 3rd Gen axles... you may find hidden treasure.

Here's good 9 bolt Thread...

http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/faq-b ... about.html

And an FYI: " http://www.thirdgen.org " is the #1 site for 3rd Gen F Body's, there are also many other sites, including Firebird Specific ones.. if you want any info on '82-'92 Birds, just PM me.

Also, unless you can fabricate, forget the S10 axle idea... the only axle that swaps readily into a 3rd Gen is either a 3rd Gen axle, 4th Gen axle, or the Aftermarket ones that will cost a lot more than the "Advertised Price" to fully assemble and add to your car.

that's some good info there, thanks for the help.

Although, I do have to say take that breakdown with a grain of salt. It may be a good generalization, but, my 1985 Base Model Firebird with a v8 came factory with a 3.08 9-bolt rear end. The 9-bolt was not exclusive to the 86-92, and likewise, the 10 bolt is not the only thing that came in the 82-85

They were put into WS6/WS7 Trans Am's & Iroc-Z's with the L69 & LB9, this included some Trans Am, WS6/WS7 Firebird S/E's LG4, & Iroc-Z's LG4 cars with a T5, but not common... The 9 Bolt was not a run of the mill GM parts pile axle. It was reserved because GM had to import them at a high expense from Australia.

The "86-92" was a simple typo on my part... the 9 bolt was introduced for '85 and the giveaway to my typo is that GM stopped putting the 9 Bolt under F-Body's starting in 1990.. and there was no "Formula" in '86... I corrected my former post with the correct info... it IS exclusive to those years... from '82-84, the only axle used was the 7.5 10 bolt... unless you blew it up and argued with the dealer for the Dana... because they didn't readily give them away.

If you have a base Firebird with a 9 Bolt, its possible thst its a UAW screw up, a service part, swapped in, you actually have a WS6/WS7-equipped Firebird S/E, or you are BS-ing.

If its not a Firebird S/E ("X" VIN) &/or you are the orig owner, I'd be very interested in hearing more about your car.
Does it have rear discs?
What are your Spring RPOs?
T5 Car?
LG4?
Norwood or Van Nyes?
