I bought a low mile 355 with L82 heads (they have had lots of work done on them, far from stock), 10:1 (actual) compression, and a 274 Energizer cam. And he's putting on a Performer with a Quadrajet for me (has a Holly, and I don't like them). He's also putting on a set of headers, mini starter, an approved fly wheel, new high end plug wires, MSD distributor and 6AL box, all new hoses and belts. And I'm also having him throw on a gear drive (yeah, I know lol). He figures it'll be in the 300-350HP range. Should feel like a rocket after that tired 305 lol.
The guy doing it is very well respected mechanic and pit tuner. He is also the big diesel guy around here. He took me to show me some of his customers cars before he would even make a deal with me. Wanted me to see the quality of his work. And this guy is amazing. I am paying a high price, but he grantees his work, and like I said his work is magazine show quality. I figure it's worth paying a bit more for quality like this, than to get another 'good deal', had enough of those lol. Oh and also, I get a set of keys to his shop while my car's in there. That way I can go in and do some work on it if I want when he's closed.
Here's a video of a drag Semi he built the engine for. Kinda cool, like 1800 HP with 2 650 shots. Not bad for 10,000 pounds lol.
your not paying a high price if it is quality work. We all have had deals that didn't turn out to be deals in the end and it costs us way more than the proper job would have cost us. For your distributor I just installed an MSD E-curve which you might to look at. It has a rev limiter and so you can save a few $$ and get a 6A box which will hook up to the distributor with no mods. There are no weights or springs in the distributor, it's all electronic with two dials to set up the advance curve and one dial for the rev limiter
That sounds kinda cool. But the one I'm getting he already has, he's basically just throwing the MSD system in. But something to think about in the future.
And the quality is very good, that's why I went for it. One of the cars he showed me (his most recent job) was an all original '70ish GTO Judge. Hi installed a 572 w/serpentine set up. Looked amazing. He said the only cutting he had to do was grind a corner down on the rad support (added an aluminum one). So at any time the owner can put the 400 back in if he wants. But nice and clean, no crap work, could have been in HotRod Magazine it looked so nice. He just had a Fiero in his shop last week. Blown SBC with a Tornado trans axle and a custom Kevlar belt system to hook the two up. The thing is wuite amazing to look at. He figures the owner has $200,000 into it so far. He only like to work on 'cool cars', so I guess that means my car's cool lol.
Instead of making a brace, you can always go get a trailer hitch...
I've got a big class 3 hitch on the back of my wagon, and it makes a world of difference as far as squeaks coming from the rear of the car as opposed to one without the hitch.
That's the one I originally made years ago. I need to make another one though since I've beat that one up quite a bit. Used it as a mounting point for my engine stand so that I could rotate the frame to paint it. lol
