what do you mean by "shooting up" in detail

If gas vapor is actually shooting up out of the carb, you've jumped (at least) a tooth on the timing chain. This recently happened to one of my 307 Olds motors, so I'm familiar with the "old faithful" impression when trying to start the car. It's easy to check. Throw a timing light on the motor and look at the timing marks while cranking. If the chain has jumped, you won't see them.

as im starting it wit out pushin the pedal..i can see like gas squirtin out the top of the carb...an i knw its in time...but it wont turn over...its not like a straight stream but almost like its coffin but its not makin the coffin noise...but its sprayin oout the top wen i try to start it...all help is appreciated cause i'm stumpd

if the timin chain jump a tooth...does this mean i have to chng the timin chain now....
