that would take a bit more work. removing the radiator, intake, lifters, pushrods, loosening/removing the rockers. depending on how many miles you have, i'd probably pull the motor and do at least a basic rebuild. or just install a 350 if you want more power.
don't sink a whole lot of perfomance money/time into a 305. it's not worth it vs getting a 350.

I had this happen to me and I ripped it down to get at the timing chain and it was fine. Not the issue.

Turned out to be the distributor or the carb (I changed them both with other used ones off my G body and cleaned the plugs and the thing started right up.

I think my carb was flooding it out and my distributor looked sloppy and worn.

You can check for timing chain play by turning it over by hand (at the vibrational dampener)and watching your rotor (cap off)Should have a little play but not more than 15 degrees I would guess.

see thats one thin i was worried about..i didnt want to do all that work for nothin...honestly its my daily driver...the crazy thing is my carb an my distributor is only a lil over a yr old...but my car nvr gave me signs that anything was wrong...that mornin it started rite up an ran fine then thats it...so imma try this old edel brock i have...an if that dont work...timin chain....man i appreciate all ya help cause my back was against the wall at this point...does anyone know a good way to clean a old carb thats just been sittin up

the only way to clean a carb that's been sitting is to take it apart and clean it...the chemicals they use in gas will leave a jell in a carb left sitting

if the carb on your car was spraying gas when you were just turning it over without touching the gas pedal indicates that the float may be stuck or dirt is interfering with the shut off needle and it's dumping fuel

yes thats wat its doing so how can i fix that....not to fimiliar wit carbs...but i will take it upart

Get yourself a manual for the carb or find something online..I have my carbs rebuilt bu a carb guru and the last one he built has some dirt particle that jammed the stop needle open and was stuck on the side of the road. I just removed the top plate off the carb and was able to blow it clear with some carb cleaner. If your carb is only a year old I'd try that first.

dont even know how to say thank u...

one way you say thank you is to do what alot of us do on here....pass along information we have learned along the years and what we have been taught by others before us...

and let us know what the problem turned out to be and what you did to fix it
