My Malibu wagon made that ticking noise too. Only when it was moving, and it was only noticible at very low speeds.
I was always too lazy to look into it, since it never created a problem, and the car ran/functioned just fine.
As far as the driveshaft thing goes,
You've got a 700-R4...
A good friend of mine had a '93 Caprice with a 700. It was towed for about 4 miles, and the trans went out a week later.
Since it's only four bolts to remove the driveshaft, I would recommend in the future to always pull it when towing, and then plug the tailshaft with either one of those plastic plugs, or an extra slip yoke if you have one laying around... unless you're fortunate enough to own/have access to a trailer.
It's probably fine, I just hope you have better luck than he did.
