Gbarrie.

Unlike the other A/G-Body Models/Brands, GM/Pontiac and the Hobby itself pretty much forgot about the Pontiac Grand Prix, LeMans, after 1972, even moreso after 1977...

The Olds Cutlass was the most popular GM product for many years, as was the "Rocket V8", so they built/sold tons of them, creating its widespead availability even today... add to that the Hurst/Olds and later return of the 442. The Olds 307 was still an Olds V8 Rocket, and people respected that then and now... "Every Brand needs its own Engine..." The Cutlass was/is/has been a car that a lot of folks owned or have memories about because of their popularity, so people want them today. The aftermarket sees the higher margin for profit because of their numbers
nd popularity.

The Monte/Malibu were Chevy/GM Mainstays... They sold tons of both, even though the Malibu sold considerably less than the Monte, it was still very common... and they're Chevy's... no explaination needed.... but I'll digress, Chevy is the Coca Cola of the automotive world.

The Buick Regal was desired by many because its a Buick... They were also the second Olds V8 choice for buyers... pricewise, a pretty good bargain and balanced well... toss in the legendary Turbo 3.8 and its coveted... ie, Profitable in the aftermarket.

The Pontiacs however... well, Pontiac said it was "Building Excitement", but it didnt help when the GM Brass, especially its President at the time, wrought vengence upon Pontiac for things that took place in the 60's and 70's... Pontiac lost its traditional V8s, notably its hallmark engine... the 400... then had its fledgling 301 and well-balanced '78-80 Grand Am killed in the nest just as they were showing some decent potential. Its Police Patrol/Pursuit Vehicle Program was shut down. The only Real Excitement Pontiac was allowed to have was the Firebird line. The LeMans & Grand Prix were emasculated, performance options didnt exist, a bench seat was standard issue, and the cheap plastic-chrome luxury demon overtook the "LJ" and replaced it with the "Brougham"... The biggest killer though came after the 301 was killed, Pontiac had no engine of its own to offer anymore... except the Iron Duke, which would have been a bigger tragedy than the Olds 350 Diesel that was available. The LG4 Chevy 305 was the only V8 & a Buick V6 was standard... under the dash and exterior body panels, those cars were essentially Chevy's with a higher pricetag.... not as bad as the Cimmeron/Cavalier, but close enough to disuade buyers... People typically didnt respect that. It was the loss of a Pontiac V8 option that pushed many buyers over to other brands..Pontiac Divisional sales fell off... and it was during this time that Pontiac started to become a national standard for fleet purchase vehicles... The end result is that many of the GPs and LeMans models made were bare bones cars, the ones actually built with any real stock coolness were abused/killed back in the day, those that survive are few and far between... because so few were made, and way less than half survive today (my pers. experience & belief)... the aftermarket doesnt see a large return on the investment.... its also why many places dont even list the '78-81 LeMans/ '78-80 Grand Am as even existing and Grand Prix parts are tied to the Monte Carlo as being the same.... a sad partial-truth... something that caught up with the Firebird line right before 1982 3rd Gen production began in 1981 when the 301/Turbo 301 were unceremoniusly killed off... a continuation of the Greek Tragedy that is the Story of Pontiac...

For the Record... I and a Pontiac Man
