Grandpa Car: 1979 Cutlass Thread

Sad to hear about your grandfather...sounds like he lived a good life and it's great that he had grandkids like yourself who enjoyed his company. You probably helped keep him young at heart with your interest in the same style of cars he enjoyed.

Thanks for the kind words, guys. It's been pretty slow at work lately so I might get a chance to actually do some work on the Cutlass. I have the 200-4R sitting on the floor waiting to go in. Have to do a little work on my '66 first.

Since the El Camino has been at my house for the last few months, I've pulled the engine and resealed and detailed it. It took a short trip to the upholstery shop for a headliner, dash pad and seat covers. I'm just about to finish up some wiring gremlin issues before it goes to the paint shop...

...which brings me to this. I went out to the other shop yesterday to throw a charger on the Cutlass thinking I might fire it up this afternoon. When I rolled the cover back I found this dent at the top of the driver's fender. It's tough to really see in the picture but it's about the size of a baseball. To say I'm pissed is a huge understatement. And, big surprise, no one knows how it got there.

I'm hoping a paintless dent removal guy can work this one out. The guy they use at my brother's body shop does incredible work. The thought of having to do body work and try to paint-match has me really nervous.

So do you get to keep the El Camino? I wish I had a set of the cutlass hubcaps those things are awesome. Well good luck on your builds.

Sorry to read about your grandpa man those are some great cars and you are really taking care of them well. Sucks about the dent hopefully the guy can get that out it might be hard on a bend like that. I use to know an awesome body guy down there but he moved to Cali awhile ago.

It's my dad's now -- I've just been storing it and working on it. My grandpa promised it to him 10 or 15 years ago and set it up in his will. Of course, after he died a couple of family members claimed they really wanted it. To avoid any hard feelings my dad offered to let them buy it, at about 1/2 market value might I add. Suddenly, they didn't really want it that bad. At that point he decided it needed a moderate resto. With the exception of the wheels and valve covers that were added in about 1970 it's completely stock. We plan to change nothing.
