Yeah, I was going to add that Hammerite was very difficult to find. From what I recall it's made in the UK. That may no longer be the case.
You're right about Xylene being used to thin it.

I will buy some of the xylene from home depot and try it out when the time comes, which should be a few weeks. For the car parts anyhow. The tool boxes and such have to wait till fall after the wagon is done.

Jim,

Not sure if you remember my "Vintage Craftman Toolbox Resto" thread, but I painted that box in grey Rustoleum Hammertone out of a rattle can, and it still hasn't dulled/chipped. It looks as good as the day I sprayed it. I wish I would have thought to do my sway bars in it. The only thing I didn't like was the long dry time (24 hours for Rustoleum) as I am rather impatient lol.

I painted my sway bar Hammerite gray. Has held up great so far.

You know, I do. It looked good too. 😀 I painted my lift with the Rustoleum light grey Hammertone. It is outside and the red color the lift was, well, lets just say it stuck out like a sore thumb. It has held up great, though I have to touch up a few spots. I agree on the dry time. I think the time to fully " cured" is even longer.

Good to hear! Suspension really gets beat up with the road dirt and stuff. I have painted things with engine paint with ceramic, caliper paint, etc, and it doesn't last long. It also doesn't touch up well.

Just out of curiousity where can this hammerite/ hammerstone be found ? So I can give it a try.

Gbarrie.

The Hammerite I bought off of amazon, but it came from Jamestown Distributors. Fast shipping and all the colors.

The Rustoleum brand HammerTone, can be found at any Home Depot. But, they never have the Red, Blue and Green on the shelf. So it has to be ordered, or from the same place I linked.

They cost more than your regular rattle can paints though, but look good IMO.

I painted my front upper and lower control arms...and rear lower control arms using Rustoleum black hammertone from a rattlecan.
The front control arms have taken a beating over the years. I think I used black hammertone out of the quart can to do my rear control arms and Iceman X-member. That seems to hold up better in my opinion.

Haha thanks. Rustoleum's cure/dry time is way longer than most other brands like Duplicolor or VHT but in my experience it's rust inhibiting qualities, gloss, and durability are far superior to the other brands. That tool box has about 85 lbs of tools in it that get thrown around inside quite frequently yet it still has minimal scratches on it.
