Has anyone made their own console?

Consider yourself further encouraged. I gotta see how this turns out.

I would really like to see a console / dash made entirely out of wood. Only certain cars would look right with it, mostly just Cutlasses. I think if done correctly it could look really nice and start a new trend. While I am feeling the wood idea, I'd have to say it should be a darker grain than oak. Definitely mahogany to match the wood steering wheel kits. Light wood is for picture frames!

I made the top part of my grand prix's console out of lexan. The origional was really cracked up and did not make it when i tryed to install the hurst on top. I used 1/4 or 3/8 cant remember what thickness.my dad got it from his work for me. After making a pain in the *ss template out of card board. I transfered it to 1/8 plywood. After zeroing the size in, i cut it with a jigsaw and filed the edges with a
6" bench grinder. And it did a great job of actually getting the lines straight and smooth. Then i scuffed the back side and painted it black.

That Would be so heavy. It would be interesting, but a dash made out of wood would probably weight 2-3x as much as a stock dash.

Grandprixpaul, your console looks great. I really dig those aircraft style switches.

Here is a partial picture of a console I did in an 86 Monte. It was a continuous console from the dash up to the rear package tray. We install two firechicken bucket seat in the rear. This was the console roughed out I will have to find a full picture. The whole console and dashboard was hand laid fiberglass.

That console looks very close to stock. Just like you said. I think I'll make one for my 70 cutlass.
Is it done yet?
