I have a 1968 350 SBO in my 83cutlass it has an MSD ready to run distributor and blaster 3 coil the other day it decided to stop sparking ive verified voltage to the coil and verified the coil was sparking I also cleared off any corrosion on the rotor button and the cap and still have no spark as per my spark tester. If I crank it for a while I’ll suddenly get it to fire one time and that’s it almost like one cylinder after a while of cranking ignites but then no ignition at all.

My only guess is after a few years the magnetic pickup and ignition module for the MSD went and they only sell them as a complete assembly for about 130 I don’t really need an MSD with the rest of the build considering the way the engine was built so I was thinking about saving the MSD for a later time when I could actually use it and afford the part and in the interim by a new HEI distributor I’ve found one on amazon for about 55 and with various coupons can get one limited lifetime warranty from advance for about 88.

so I am thinking about doing that however considering the HEI won’t be as easily tunable as the MSD what year 350 should I be buying the distributor for as of now if I remember correctly I have 18 degrees centrifugal advance and I think 25 in the vacuum though I don’t remember.

the motor is unfortunately fairly low compression I believe due to a build mistake and the cam I was told is an RV cam so I guess practically stock.

not very well versed in distributor ignition systems only really familiar with my MSD so anything helps you can see more about my build in my build thread.

thanks!

Brand New Compatible Ignition Distributor w/ Cap & Rotor 1045511 403RHEI for 1968-1976 Oldsmobile OLDS V8 HEI 260 307 350 403 455 Engine PC6009 PE328 KA-1045511 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074KKR17G/?tag=gbody-20

I was considering this but of course they don’t post the timing curve so I’m kind of at a loss for that.

Mist likely its going to have a stock curve, since you motor is " basically stock" it should be fine.
Or by a curve kit and customize the curve

when you do change it the MSD is indexed differently than an HEI so when you remove the cap note what cylinder the rotor is pointed at on the cap and set the rotor on the HEI distributor pointed to the same cylinder on the cap.

Ok that makes sense to me I just wanted to make sure it wouldn’t be a huge issue it seemed fairly simple.

And I’m correct in assuming if there is spark from the coil and voltage to the coil but no spark from the MSD that it is the module pickup assembly thing the MSDs have?

wiring wise essentially the HEI is a 3 wire set up right? 12v ignition, ground and tach?

it could be just a bad cap and/or rotor
Pulled the cap and rotor off saw some corrosion on the cap used some sand paper to clean it same with the rotor and made sure the rotor button was contacting the cap. Even so shouldn’t it at least spark somewhat considering electricity jumps gaps?
