So I finally worked my way to the rear of the car,
It’s a 1969 12 bolt from a chevelle I believe since it has the trailing arm mounts on top, it’s obviously shortened, with a Strange Lightweight Pro Race Spool D1549
and Richmond gears, it has 33 spline axles, and not sure what brand c clip eliminaters at the end of axle tubes, as well as using volvo 1205782 rotor and calipers which were from these models
Volvo2401975 - 1993
Volvo2601975 - 1985
Volvo7401984 - 1992
Volvo7601982 - 1990
Volvo7801986 - 1991|
Volvo |9401991 - 1998W/o Multilink
Volvo |9601991 - 1997w/o Multilink

Can you tell me anything else
About this setup? Was this a common thing to use Volvo parts? And is it worth saving/reusing?
Thank you! I can take any other measurements needed for more information, after I remove the spool, what differential do you recommend, I was leaning towards a trutrac?

Those don’t appear to be c-clip eliminators. Looks more like a converted axle end. Maybe ford ends on a Chevy rear.

Interesting, this is why I always appreciate your guys input and wealth of knowledge. What would be the reason for this? Were the ford ends stronger some how? Assuming these are still 12 bolt axles, and just ford axle ends? And is this setup safe to drive without an axle flying out lol it’s retained by that plate with 4 bolts and nuts, and the bearing sits snug in the axle end, was just going to replace the seal/o-ring and pop it back in,
With new calipers/pads/brake lines, and gear oil for now until it’s running and driving, then bring it to my diff guy to setup a posi for me, and ditch the spool.

It also looks like Ford ends to me which eliminates the need for c-clip eliminators since the axle is retained by the plate that bolts on.

Yup definitely some Ford ends, someone put them on there when they shortened it. Plenty safe to drive, will have to break them 4 bolts to come out. If it's a street car I prefer a Torsen type Differential.

This car is also pretty dated, they did some
funky things back then lol but hey if it works, it works with what they had, and probably not a huge aftermarket available for it all, especially with cncs and billet machining now a’ days

Thank you for the input, always appreciated!

The Ford Torinos had the biggest axle bearings so the most support for the axle. Popular upgrade to cut away the old axle ends and attach the Torino pockets in their place. Benefits? The bigger bearing, being able to use the sealed bearing instead of the torrington tyoe of bearing and the inner race face is not the axle, unlike the GM way of things. Eliminates the C-clip which can wear and break. Retains the axle in the housing in the event that you snap an axle as opposed to the C-Clip which will only retain the inner stump of the axle and allows the damaged/snapped off outer section to just unscrew itself out of the housing, taking the wheel and brake drum with it.

Some type of C-clip eliminator kti typically becomes mandatory at the drag strip when you reach a certain plateau in the speed department.

Perfect explanation, thank you for elaborating, I was hoping there was an actual reason behind the install and not because they were using whatever crap they had laying around, well atleast not for the brakes 🤣 those ends are pretty beefy

Ford ends also give you a popular bolt pattern on the housing end for aftermarket brake upgrades.

C clip eliminators are just a crap add on. Ford Bearings are the proper upgrade.

I do prefer tapered bearings for heavy cornering but most hot rods do not see this abuse. I used to road course a Mustang with Ford ends and burned up 2 sets in the short time I was playing with that car.
