To actually get the car running, it's pretty simple and straightforward. Get a wiring diagram to help, either a service manual or I believe the Autozone website has them. Make sure the HEI wiring is connected properly, should just be a plug. Double check that the distributor is installed correctly, i.e. cylinder 1 on TDC and rotor pointing to corresponding ignition wire. Double check the firing order. Make sure you've got the starter and all the wires to it connected properly. Same with the alternator and battery. Make sure the block is grounded to the firewall. As for the vacuum lines, the most critical thing for getting it started is just make sure there are no open ports on the carb or the intake. You can hook up and streamline the vacuum routing later, if all you're trying to do is get it started, it's not all that critical off the bat. Finally, timing is probably going to be way off, so if it kind of wants to start but doesn't, try turning the starter a few degrees one way or the other, and see if this improves it or not. Starting fluid helps here. Keep homing in until you get it started, make sure you've got oil pressure, and then check right away to get timing around where it needs to be. 10* BTDC is a good spot at this point. Then once everything is hooked up correctly, you're going to need to tune it properly.
