I hate when people ask me how my "Monte Carlo" is doing. Its a frickn Oldsmobile people :blam:

Yes, but unfortunately most of the Cutlasses you see have had their Olds engines replaced with Chevys, so really they're 'Monte Cutlasses'.

I agree with those who say these car's are rare. There may be a few places where they may be more plentifull, but overall you will just not see these cars on the road in most places. Around here, I used to see TONS of G-body Cutlasses in the 80's, but never once did I ever see a 442 or H/O. In fact it wasn't untill 1991-92 I discovered there was even such thing as a Hurst Olds when I saw one up close for the first time at the dealership I was working at. The fist 442 I saw around here was around that same time too. I was like 'they made G-body 442's? Whoa!'. Ironically, it was the rare white colored one too.

Ironically, I've now seen more 442's and H/O's in the past few years than I have in my entire life prior to purchasing mine ( about 5+ years ago ).

Those rich guys who bought 442's just to sit on and make money off of are fools. Cars are a horrible investment unless it's REALLY something rare and desirable. I don't care what anyone says, cars are meant to be driven period!

According to this (misinformed) individual, it's 79!

I don't see too many of them, let alone the base '78-'80 Salon. Same deal with the '78-79 Century or Turbo coupe. They weren't very popular at the time and people weren't buying them. I personally wouldn't mind having one eventually. I think they're unique, even if people call them the butt-less Cutlass.

The only downside is that the popularity....or lack thereof...hurts the demand, then in turn hurts the price. They just don't command the same price as the later 442's and h/o's. I like 'em anyway. The floor shift models are a little harder to come by though.

My last car was an 87 Olds 442 that was blue with an astroroof. I didn't think it was anything special, but Olds guys used to come up and oogle over it at car shows talking about how rare it was. All I ever found was that some dude told me they only made 501 Cutlass/442s with the astroroof that year, and it was a low prod# in blue. Next to the '81 gutlass supreme I had for a short time in high school, this was the slowest car I've ever owned. I had intentions of doing a 455 swap, but the car was too nice and original to modify.

The car is now in Michigan.

My car does have the floor shifter. but we replaced it with a b&m ratchet shifter. and it will soon have the original engine.

I know of at lest 6 of them in the madison WI area sitting in garages that havnt been registered in many years. I worked as a concrete finisher there for about 10 years and in these high dollar subdivisions you get to see what the rich people have parked in their huge garages. I have talked to a few of them and they all said they lusted after them when they were younger and after they bought them they realized that they will one day be worth something so they parked it. They live in $500,000- 800,000 houses and have no reason to sell them ever.

I've also got 2 in my garage that are unregistered. One is an 84 project that will soon be finished and the other is an 87 442-70,000 original miles and mint, never seen salt, snow etc. I'm half afraid to drive the 87 the truth of the matter is if someone get's careless and hits me the insurance company would total it for lack of parts available and give me a check that wouldn't even cover what the car is worth. To me it's better off sitting in the garage on the lift than on the road with all the other careless people.
