how to measure for V belt

Why would you want to measure for V-belts? Couldn't you just go with standard belts for your car (engine)?

I do remember an old trick using a piece of rope to fit over the pulleys, and using the rope for the measurement.
 
i have no clue about my engine since the front brackets are all piece together and i dont have the original belts. i will try the string method
 
Could you post a pic of the front of your engine? Perhaps we can determine what belts to use according to your bracket setup.
