the most interesting thing from that documentary, if you see it...

they investigated how parental involvement in their kid's lives and time/monetary investment has skyrocketed over the years. Parents are now more involved in their kid's lives than ever. Nearly every decision is made by the parents. Just look at registration day at college... the poor kid is just there for his signature...

so after all this involvement and investment, why are test scores, job performance, and overall achievements in life becoming so much worse? In the 50s, the average age to leave home was 16-18... Kid's had jobs in before their adulecents. Now'adays... people only leave home for school, maybe in their 20s... And if they've even left that early, the end up back at home not too much later. I know people in their mid 20s that have never had a job, schooling fully paid for, still living at home.

Kids are so sheltered today, they never fully develop the problem solving sections of their brain. As a child, playing on the play structure, getting hurt, climbing trees, etc... these all contribute to your brain development. We learn to confront and solve problems. But with today's bubble kids in their virtual video game/smart phone world, and their parents making every decision for them, their brain functions never develop. And all these mental illments like ADHD, Autism, Dislexia, etc... why do you think these statistics are going up?

Again...well said Khan....what I cant figure out is how this all came to pass so easily, without much notice or regard....I guess if you were born in the 60's or early 70's, then your parents are Baby Boomers....but if you were born in the 80's and 90's, then your parents are baby boomers kids.....and there was a serious shift at some point in parental skill levels/priorities.....and it's still very hard to understand why or narrow down to one particular reason for it.

Heres a good example of what I mean....

I can't decide if there is one defining moment, or many little reasons... I have a theory tho (among many)

I think self and family status has always played a big roll in how people behave. In the past, news or rumors spread slowly, information was spread by word of mouth. People could live their lives more privately, and thus were able to build a structure of living at home that suited them.

with the mass market of the, then newly invented, TV in nearly every home... the idea of motion film and imagery was very new. People were now no longer just looking at themselves, but they could now dive into the lives of others. Comparisons began... A new image of the perfect self and perfect family was formed.

the idea of "look at so and so's kid, they did such and such" was becoming more popular. I think this is why in the 50s, there was a new standard of moral ethics and social conduct that everyone conformed to. There was a new standard for civil behavior and conduct. Everyone wanted to be like the image of the perfect family.

By the 60's, civil conformity had people wrapped so tight, and with the surrounding political atmosphere of war and propaganda, something had to snap. The hippy movement really kicked the idea of conformity, social conduct, and civilty, down the drain. Being a rebel was the latest fab.

the idea of Civility and Manners really took a beating, and hasn't quite recovered. People just know better than to conform to a certain set code of conduct. But it's funny how we can conform to the latest craze...

there's another discussion for how today's generation is so easily influenced by garbage media. Seems like we can feed them anything, start new trends, show them celebrity gossip, garbage reality shows, etc... and they'll follow it like (insert insulting description here)

not to offend you JBreu, but your post isnt opinion, rather its more of a suggestion to end others opinions. Why not give us your take and maybe we can understand why you have desires to end this "nonsense"?

Khan.... I can tell that you and I came from the same era and had similar childhood experiences. You are right on the money....

And ... if I had to pick a day when it all seemed to start to unravel...it would be Friday, Nov. 22, 1963... A year before I was born....and if anyone doesnt know what happened that day without Googling it, they should slap their old history teacher upside the head!

I'm all about having a good time and things like that, but not at the expense of the less fortunate. I see that this thread started about people posting in a non-intelligent manners to some of us members..But who is to say that the poster himself or herself isn't the moset educated, or maybe from another country and they write words how they say them? Maybe they aren't as fortunate as you and I...But to carry on or mock the way people speak isn't that cool....I agree that sometimes it's a pain in the a$$ but we don't know the story with that poster....then the thread gets carried away with parenting and all that....Opinions are opinions. As a Parent, I teach my children that if they don't have anything nice to say about that person, then don't say anything at all....Now this is only my opinion, not a "suggestion". 8)

would this be a bad time to mention I'm from the '80s? Born and raised in the middle east...

Coming from a poor country and poor surroundings, life is more basic back home. The cultural swing you saw here in the 70s/80s started to play out in my country in the 90s. But it seems to be happening at a quicker pace there now.

I'm fascinated by human behavior and cultural development. Studying modern historical events, and even pre-modern events, you start to notice a pattern. Just like culture has patterns... it all repeats itself in one form or another. People and our world is quite predictable.

I'm very old fashioned, I pay alot of attention to detail, and I focus on things many people normally miss. And I think if I was born in the 50s or born in the 90s, it's pretty hard to miss how ridiculous things are getting, and in a such a short amount of time.

... it's just amazing to me that alot of people DON'T seem to see it. I guess it's the era of ignorance...
