To start from the beginning, my intermediate license expired in September of this year when I turned 18. My car broke down the day before my birthday. The day after my birthday I was gonna go up to the DMV and renew my license, but as stated my car broke down so I had no need for that at the time, and soon I just forgot about it. Three days ago I finally got my car running and I drove my brother to his friends house. On the way back home, I got pulled over for an apparent burnt out brake light. The cop ended up only writing me up for the expired license. Now, the question remains: do I need to pay the outrageous $135 fine before I can renew my license? Or can I just renew it and pay before the due date? This was no one's fault but mine. To tell the truth, I just plum forgot.

in Ontario if you get nailed on driving on an expired licence if you renew your licence the prosecutor will withdraw the ticket most of the time. For my daughter-in-law I got her expired licence ticket ($325) and her expired sticker ticket ($110) tossed. She renewed her licence and tag on the same day she got her tickets. Get your licence renewed and go fight the ticket

Same way here in KY. As Steve said, get it renewed ASAP and take it to show proof, majority of the time it will get dropped!

Different scenario....back in '01( hell you were still probably wearing diapers lol, damn makes me feel old!!!!) my buddy bought a used saturn that had darker than legal tint when he got it. He got ticketed for the tint, got it fixed and took the receipt to court and it was dismissed.

$135 is not an exorbitant amount. The fines here in Harris County would stand your hair on end. Have you graduated high school? What are your career plans, if you don't mind me asking? With your talent with your hands it seems like you would be a natural for a diesel or heavy equipment technician or perhaps a machinist?

In Iowa they really give you a break on getting your licence renewed.....here they'll give you a ticket at 12:01 am on the day it expires. You might want to thank the cop though cause he/she could have made you walk and have the car towed.

Expired Driver's License
Your Iowa driver's license remains valid for 60 days after the expiration date. The IA DOT gives you this extra time to process your renewal application.

Bit after 60 days.. but thanks for the info and the input.

Yeah, I might just sack up and pay it. Too busy for court crap. I'm graduating in May from high school. College is in the future, vocational school. Des Moines Area Community College, DMACC to be specific. Great automotive programs there. And the college as a whole as far as community. colleges go I think is one of the top 20 or so in the country. Automotive body/collision repair, engine technician, maybe some diesel stuff just to learn how it works. Become ASE certified. Takes two-three years. In a few years time though. Gotta get a steady decent paying job, maybe my own place. Hell, I'll live in an outhouse if it's attached to a two car garage.

Pay it and move on. I know in your area the cops are more strict than they are here in the great white north but it seems like once the cops know you have an expired licence or another issue they will keep an eye out for your car.

Oh I've been pulled over loads of times. This was the first time for an actual reason and first ticket.

Pick something that will lead to a well paying career or its just not worth it. Do some research on what pays best and also consider what you enjoy. Try to get a job doing what you are going to school for as an apprentice. If you work hard and have the discipline to string together enough good decisions you will succeed and have plenty of money to do the things you want. It just takes some time and perserverence.
