Most people assume that the poor ride quality is because of the big wheels and skinny tires, but in reality it's usually the result of the worn out suspension components. I've driven from Tx to Ga on multiple occasions with 22s and 26s. Having fresh suspension makes all of the difference in the world for ride comfort.

Names John, my son (he's 15) and I recently bought this 86 Monte Carlo SS for a project car. We like the body style and the power potential. The Monte has 58K original miles and is mainly stock, no rust and very clean. Only; wheels, alarm, stereo and speakers seem to be custom.

We joke how it looks like a drug dealers ride but, we're changing the image of the car to a street performance image.

Our plans;
Ditch the 22" wheels, upgraded suspension and steering components, LS3 or Blueprint 383 with EFI, auto 4 speed or manual trans, rebuild the rear end and restore some of the car's door decals.

Everyone has hopes and dreams for their new cars but, one thing for sure; the 305 and that 200R4 must go! We have an LS3 long block now for a different project, and as soon as our garage is built we'll contemplate our engine and trans options.

John.

Welcome to the site from Houston. Cool project! That truck you guys did is beautiful. My dad and brother and I spend alot of tme together working on each other's cars so I totally appreciate the quality time aspect of your project with your son. Let us know how we can help. This site is loaded with helpful, knowledgeable guys. Since you mentioned having a 78 Camaro when you were in high school, here's the thread on my brother's 78 Z28 if you are bored and want to check it out.....

Thanks for posting the pics, James.
It looks like a cool ride...but you may want to start your own thread rather than hijack this gentleman's thread.

There is room for everyone in GBF. We may have different tastes and styles, but I can sure appreciate all the hard work and creativity that people put into their cars, either as full original restorations, restomods, racers, or customs.

James,
I did ask for pictures, granted. I can understand your point that you wanted to show him your Monte, but it also would've been nice having your own thread with pics and telling us a bit about your car and what you've accomplished.
It's all good...it's certainly not the end of the world.

If I decide to keep these wheels I'm going to order the 2 inch drop spindles and front and rear disc brake kits and 2 inch drop springs for the rear. And probably use some spacers to bring the wheels out somewhat flush with the body.

Max torque,
So I've been talking to a sales guy at blueprint engines and the most displacement for my money of course; who wouldn't. They sell a 454 small block the problem is it has a lot of horsepower and torque.

Do any of you I know if I have to do anything special special to the frame to accommodate 550 FT LBS of torque. if I have to do a lot of work I'm probably just going to get the classic 383 but the EFI and call it good. But I really want the bigger engine.

There's a guy on here with a 600" + cubic inch big block and lots of people with hydraulics which would wreak havoc on a frame I'm sure. There must be some collective knowledge on this subject

Edwardcourt, I would recommend looking into the Hellwig Frame FX reinforcement kit. “Kit” is perhaps a bit of a misnomer, since they’re weld-in pieces. But short of a full custom frame it’s probably your best bet for beefing up the stock frame. I’m planning on using it for my wagon.
