IROC Wagon Project

Thanks you guys,

The parking brake is all incumbent on the console mount so until I get the shifter sorted out so I can comfortably bang gears, I'm dead in the water. Working with a guy on eBay as we speak to get a shifter with the right offset and right length to make it look and work right in the console. Once I get that done, I can finish mounting the console and thus mount the park brake bracket in the correct location.

There are two different lengths of park brake cables, essentially first and second design. It's my intention to use the factory stuff with the only modification maybe at the cable that actually attaches to the park brake lever. I can adjust the length at that point without a lot of fuss. Really hoping it's close enough I won't need to do anything.

The F body uses the seat belt reinforcement to assist with park brake cable management. (Photo attached) Im a little indifferent about changing those mounts seeing how my big *ss will be in the seat. Beyond that, the console with the OE shifter sits about two inches to the rear too far. Shifter hits in second, fourth and reverse gear positions. I'm hoping I can offset this deficet with the shifter. Just glad I have an extra console to hack up....

I suppose I should level set where I got this idea in the first place. I've worked for GM forty years and have seen a lot of cool stuff. When each division had their own engineering staff one of my close buds dad worked in Pontiac experimental engineering back in Pontiac Michigan. We were talking one day over a beer (maybe more) and he said he had photos of an experimantal 82 Trans Am station wagon. I asked for copies of the photos and hence my idea (actually GM's) was set in motion.

Now there's nothing wrong with Pontiacs, I've had several over the years. Deep down, I'm a Chevrolet guy, so that's what I decided to build. So everyone doesn't think I'm full of it, here's some photos of the car and what the car looked like cubed after it went through the shredder at Sam Allen and Son. ...   8)

All I can say is, what a shame. But from what I understand many experimental and concept cars were scrapped.

Thanks for sharing the pics, Scott. Although they're a bit painful to see.

Scott, thanks for sharing the story and photos with us. I remember seeing that Trans Am wagon on the cover of several magazines back in the day, and thinking that it was a pretty cool car. Too bad it was scrapped. Kind of hard to look at those pictures. That's one of those cars that I thought should have been put into production.
I'm really enjoying your Malibu wagon project. Judging by the photos, that Camaro console should look really good in the car once you get the fitment issues sorted out. I'm really intrigued with locating the parking brake handle in that location. Please keep up the good work, and keep the updates and photos coming. Thanks again.

Wow that trans am looked wicked,to bad it was crushed that is just heart "wrenching"
Thanks for the pic's im checking out your iroc wagon build,im going to call that thing iroc WAyGONe
because its gonna be out of this world...NICE WORK.GBoDYs UP!!!

Here's the new shifter. Had to mix and match to get what I wanted but Chris at Core Shifters on eBay worked with me to get the right combination put together. I didn't want the shifter sticking way up out of the console. It also needed to be offset toward the passenger side to effectively clear the console opening.

Beyond that, I'm glad I didn't rivet the shifter cover in. It has to be replaced because it bulges out too far. It won't allow the console to sit down where it needs to be. So, this is after I welded up the screw holes in the floor. Not to worry, I have the lower heavy rubber and metal IROC lower seal and have already test fit it in the car. Just didn't get any photos when it was mounted.

So, other than the smell of burning paint and sparks flying everywhere, it was a normal day out in the shop this afternoon. ...
