IROC Wagon Project

Didn’t get a lot done this weekend but I did get something done so I’m gonna call that progress. Picked up the parts from the powder coater and was pleased with the correct shade of black this time around. It’s a little thing but it is a thing.

I built the final two console brackets and test fit the dash in with the console nailed down. Was relatively pleased with the way it turned out so after doing some measuring, I took it all out of the car again. The next time the console goes in will hopefully be the last. I need to make some patterns for the carpeting but other than that, it’s a wrap. Sorry, no photos of the semi-finished product until it’s a finished product.

Mounted the hood latch mount and hood latch assembly to the core support but I’m not sure if I’m sticking with the supposedly correct attaching hardware. Not really blue or black but more of a putrid shade of purple. Works for now until I see a better example, is there an OE example out there?

The contrasting black breaks up all that silver. You’d think the dummy with the camera could have at least dusted it off before he took the picture?

I have all of these Malibu badges, wonder what I can do with them? Yeah wise guys, besides that. I have a plan, not one I’ll share now but will soon in an upcoming installment. Badges? We don't need no stinking badges.

In case you were wondering, yes it’s true, there really is a place you can buy the little sleeves that go over the door rods. I don’t know about yous guys but I can’t handle rattles.

And no one can ever have enough of this vacuum crap. I figure with this pile of stuff I have I should be able to get at least two good looking lines coming out of my firewall.

Scott, looking good. It totally went out of my head with the lock/handle rod covering. Where may I ask did you get that?

X2. I would have never thought of that..

Scott, it's nice to see how meticulously everything has been done. Nice work as always.
The trim pieces that you're showing around the quarter glass, are they drip rail moulding pieces?

Are you using the aluminum (pseudo stainless) trim around the door window frames? I usually see them on later year wagons and sedans.
In fact my replacement doors were from an '82-'83 and had them on there...I eliminated them...you want 'em?
I thought I had a few extra drip rail pieces. I'll take another look around.

Hey, I hope that run channel that you picked up is the right one. If that's the price on the box, you got a smokin' deal. 😀

Blake I appreciate your confirmation on a couple things. That said, I have a couple of additional questions. So on the beaded quarter window trim, do you know what actually holds the pieces in place? Does it get wedged somehow under the molding retaining clips? It’s been a long, long time since I pulled those pieces off.

The beaded trim piece is just a tension fit underneath the lower 1/4 glass trim piece.
The reliefs trimmed out on the flat edge are actually to clear the trim clips.

*note to those adding clips, you can use these pieces as templates for where the clips go.

Good idea man. That would certainly take the guess work out...at least on the sill.

Are you going to bother using the bead strips on yours? Mine are pretty hammered from corrosion, and the actual beaded parts are disintegrating. I might consider using a plastic or rubber bead strip if I can find it in lengths...or not.

Now that I think of it, the bead strip would help with the continuation of the bead running from the window sweeps.

Howdy Jack,

I think I'm a little confused on what trim came on what year cars? The trim I'm using looks and feels like stainless, bends like stainless but I'm pretty sure it isn't stainless. The stuff I have is from a 1980 wagon and a 1978 sedan. The stuff around the quarter glass on my 81 wagon is completely different? The drip rail on the 81 is similar to the stuff on the 80, I'd say identical. The stainless inside the front doors toward the front of the car was the same on the 80, 81 and the 78. Like I said, I don't know what the heck the deal is.

A long answer to a short question, yes, I'm interested in the trim you're not using. Just shoot me a price and an eMail address to pay to.

Thanks for your kind words as always. Thank you Blake for your continued direction.

Adios... Scott, ...

Hello Jeff,

I apologize. It appears lately I have a habit of glossing over on your questions. Not intentional I assure you.

I really just want a natural finish without a paint or clear coat that's going to wear off. I figure the steel molecules will absorb some of the WD and prolong the rust process. I'm not sure how long I'd like it to last but I'm betting it will go five years, at least in Arizona. Worse case scenario, It'll give me something to fool with down the road.

Thankz, ...Scott
