IROC Wagon Project

Scott, thanks for that link, I'll have to go and order some of that. I am with you on the rattles, I hate them, 😀 . I went so far as to put split pins in my door hinge pins to keep them tight after I put new bushings and pins in them.

Thanks alot for the response Scott. I know you'll get around to it eventually. I kinda figured that with the climate in your area, the process that you're using would hold up for at least 3-4 years. I don't think I'd ever be able to do anything like that up here. I'd be lucky if it lasted a year, between changes in temperature and humidity. Keep up the good work.

Snuck out to the shop for a little while this afternoon, Friday. Kinda nice being home for more than the weekend for a change. I thought about how much faster I could get this car done if I had a 9 to 5. Naw, can’t do that, don’t see me driving a desk after being a free spirit all these years.

I bought a couple of fenders, crazy thing is they’re two tone and one of the colors almost matches exactly to the paint on the car only the fender doesn’t have any metallic in it. It’s wild how close the color is. Anyway, kind of gives a flavor of what it would look like two tone maroon and white.

So I went ahead and put two layers of duct tape on all the fender surfaces that would be touching the car so I could mount them up. I’ll go ahead and use this dimension to align my under hood stiffener bars and then take the fender off again. They will need to be soda blasted and painted. As long as my body guy is painting my junk, I’ll pull out the doors and move the mirrors at the same time.

I think the car will sit just right once the motor, trans and the rest of the sheet metal is installed.

These are Arizona fenders so they’re really nice. Only downer is the antenna hole. Such is life, that can’t be that big of a dilemma to repair.

Sat the dash in last Sunday and did my final test fit of the console. I now have all the brackets in place and fasteners to hold the console securely. The last item I need to attend to on the console is to channel the air ducts into the two outside ducts on the IROC console. Funny thing is, they line up perfectly with the G-Body duct outlets.

Scott I notice that they're later fenders. Do you plan on using the side marker lights,or are the holes going to be filled in?

Hey Jack,

Yep, I'm using the four eye header panel and thus the reason I needed different fenders. Of course I already have two fenders painted and ready to bolt on the car but why let that stop me?

I think we all agree, we get a lot smarter as we build our cars. Unfortunately, I've been at this car off and on for ten years so what I knew then doesn't compare to what I know now.

I've never seen a luggage rack on a hearse, in other words; You can't take it with you. ...

Where are you at on your car these days?

Scott, ...

Scott,
I didn't realize that you were updating the appearance with the later fenders and 4-eyed header panel. I did contemplate using the quad headlight setup, but went with the '81 header instead.
You've certainly put a lot of painstaking detail into all your parts, pieces, and hardware. I admit, I've cut corners in that respect.

I still have the sound deadening to do yet, plus headliner and finish painting the interior panels like the rear wheelhouse panels and cargo floor. I've got most of the headliner perimeter trim and other smaller pieces painted. I didn't realize how many parts and pieces a wagon interior had. I still have the windshield and quarter glass to be installed yet.

Looking back in retrospect, I think I should have purchased a gallon of the SEM interior paint. I've already gone through a bunch of spray cans.
I hope to be able to drive it this summer. We'll see what happens.

I am really liking that f-body console with the GP dash! I may have to do that!

I also like the F-body console. It looks better than the GP console IMO. Although it's almost similar in appearance, but less coffin looking. The handbrake coming thru the console is a cool feature.

I agree, I have overlooked so many at the junk yard, it's ridiculous. Now when I want one I probably won't find one.

As for that cruise control bracket scoot, it bolt over the gas pedal mounting point. The 3 bolt holes should line up. I just looked at my wagon and I have on there already.

I’ve been trying to get the console completed so I can move on to the next task. Because an IROC console didn’t come in a G-Body, I needed to lengthen the sides of the console so the transition from carpet on the console to carpet on the floor was closer. It’s probably one of those things no one will notice but it looked funny to me the way it was.

I have both of the sides fairly complete and will move to the rear where the gap is between the console box and the hump in the floor. I probably added about two maybe three inches to the console sides to make them extend to within an inch of the floor. Once the carpet is on the console box and on the floor, it should be a seamless transition.

I happened to have a busted up console that I used for material. Before I remembered I had the scrap parts, I was going to use the shirt cardboard I made the patterns from. With the fiberglass mat and a couple thick coats of fiberglass, it would have worked fine. The scrap material from the junk console just means I had to use less fiberglass resin. The beauty of this project is everything I’m doing will be covered up with carpet so there’s not a lot of finesse or skill needed.

Here’s the funky little bracket I made for the front console mount. I wasn’t going to put a mount here but decided that since it will be getting a fair amount of abuse from the shifter and the e-brake, it would be better firmly secured.

Here’s the rear console mount and where the e-brake cable goes through the floor. Stripped all these mounts from a Z28 floorpan I bought and welded them to the G-Body floor.

Since I’ve conceded to the need to change the rear caliper setup, I started to get the new parts ready for installation. No, I’m not going to do the change until the car is nearly ready to drive but at least the parts will be ready when I am. I went with the 93-97 Z28 rear brake setup. It’s called PBR brakes I guess because PBR is the company that makes the calipers and their name is cast into them. The only PBR I know of prior to these brakes is the stuff the old man used to drink when I was a kid.

The PBR setup is similar to the 98-02 Z28 but the calipers face the rear of the car and the park brake uses the disc pads to hold against the rotor instead of the rotor having internal shoes. With this setup I should be clear of the frame issue.

This is what one of the calipers looked like before I started on it.

This is what it looks like now. Yes, I detailed it, not sure if it will be seen but it had to be painted any ways so I painted some of the components contrasting colors.
