IROC Wagon Project

Scott, I'll be painting most of my stuff in the spring I thing. I don't look forward to it.

Jack and I were chatting about carpet so I thought I'd go through this while it's fresh in my mind. That and it didn't require me to get dripping wet with sweat. Was curious myself after I posted so I went out to the shop this morning. Here’s the miscellaneous carpet pieces and the unique features. So, if you're changing interior color on a wagon, you'll need to order extra yardage to accommodate the extra wagon carpeted pieces. Whether the carpet supplier can sew the vinyl edges remains to be seen. May have to be accommodated locally. I'm just in the looking at colors phase right now.

Basically, besides the main carpet chunks that you can get premolded from ACC, there are five additional pieces. This assumes that your rear door panels don't have carpet, mine do not.

I didn’t take a photo of the load floor carpet but I did capture the vinyl edge detail I was talking about.

Two pieces for the bottom of the doors.

Two pieces for the fold down rear seat, top and bottom.

Lower detail. This is the piece that slides up under the upper piece when the seat is in the upright useable position.

Upper detail Front.

Upper detail back. This is a close-up of a rubber track sewn into the top of the upper folding seat back. Not sure if this is for ease of factory assembly or what.

Upper back detail complete. You can see there wasn’t a lot of glue holding the carpet to the seat back but what glue there was, was stuck like a nose on yer face. Same with the door panel pieces.

Well, beyond the carpet summary, been working on non-physically demanding projects due to the monsoon weather. Was reasonable today so I poked around on car stuff for several hours. Have a couple of little projects I needed to spend time on, it all has to be done at some point and as far as I know, there’s no specific order it goes in. Basically I work on stuff I’m gonna need at some point and store it DONE on my bakers racks.

I want the car to appear completely bone stock so I’m gonna run a smog pump that’s not really a smog pump. How you ask is that possible?

L98 Smog Pump front.

Generally I don’t answer a question with a question but in this case; When is a Smog Pump not a Smog Pump? Generally when one pulls the guts out so it's no longer functional I guess.

L98 Smog Pump rear. These things really are crude and heavy. Until I can have a shaft made to replace the heavy steal drum inside, this will have to do. The flyweights and vanes must of added two pounds. The drum has to weigh three or more pounds.

Another project I’ve been working on is the dash. When the weather settles down a bit, I’ll be ready to recolor. In the interim, I can take care of the minutia that essentially encompasses the details.

Here’s the typical dash Glove Box applique.

Here’s the rear.

While this is far from done, you can see the general concept.

Got another column from Kevin because I really wasn't all that hopped up on the unit I had. Note to self, don't paint the column then take it apart. Take the column apart, replace the pieces and then paint. Here’s the steering column freshly redone. Replaced whatever needed replacing and all the switches. I really hate electrical gremlins but with all the changes, I’m sure I’ll have my share. Doesn’t even look like the column you sent me does it Kevin?

I need a new (different) Tilt Lever. Not sure if this one was like this or if when I wiped it with lacquer thinner it went south.

All new switches and bearings.

And that's gonna do it for this week.

i "gut " my smog pump as well there scott !:wink:a member over ecc turned me on to the trick.really looks nicer, more "complete"with the pump that without.loving the a10tion to detail!!!heres a pic of a set-up i did on my tpi/t5 im putting in on of my SS's.

Scott,
Thanks for posting pics of the rear cargo area carpet. Like I said, I have those pieces that I intend to use as patterns. However, I don't recall the rubber upper channel piece. I probably left it at the junkyard when I pulled those pieces out. :?
I do have the little chrome bezel that fits around the slotted opening for the seat back release....but somehow I don't think I have that rubber piece....I look up in the rafters, but guessing the way i have these pieces folded, it's probably not there.
BTW, my door panels do not have the carpeted inserts. I will most likely add them as I go along.

Does Arizona law require you to have a smog pump? I'm assuming so, being that you're going thru the trouble of installing one.
I like the idea of gutting it of the vanes, etc. At least it will look like it should, only not function...

Very Nice Jose! I'm glad I’m not the only one building multiple cars at once.

Jack, I don't think the rubber channel is the end of the world. I just wanted to show it because I have the detail to show. Heck, I may not even use it on my car. As you can see it's sewn into the seam with the vinyl edge trim and who knows if it makes a difference or not.

Funny you mentioned your door panels don't have the carpet. I'm thinking of maybe using aluminum or something trick other than carpet but I have too many irons in the fire to think that far out. I think you're taking the right approach, no for now and maybe later if you feel like it.

I don't have to have the smog pump on the car but want it to look OE so I'm using it. If it wigs out at high RPM I already have the pulley that takes its place. I have to believe that any fuel injected engine is much cleaner than the carbureted engines of the 80's. I'm not using cats, at least for now but have allocated real estate in case I need to in the future.

Thankz, ...Scott, ...

Lookin Good. Keep up the awesome work love to see it finished. I have an 1983 2 door T-top cutlass wagon with a 5 speed Im working on myself it feels like no end in sight. Keep us posted. Thanks,

Scott,
I'm thinking that the rubber channel is not really necessary. I'm sure if it was there, on the wagon that I removed the carpet from, I would have taken it. I'm kinda liking the idea of using something other than carpet on the door panel inserts. Perhaps carbon fiber or engine turned as an insert. I plan on doing a carbon fiber gauge surround, so carbon fiber door panel inserts might complement it nicely. We'll see down the road.

As for the ACC carpet. They only indicate the kit for 2-dr. If I'm not mistaken, the 2-dr and 4-dr kit would be the same for a wagon, being that all these different models share the same floor pan configuration.

I notice that you'll also be using the later style column with the wiper switch/ stalk. So you'll be using the later style wiper motor as well.

Hey man, welcome aboard.
You're going to have to start a thread and post some pics of your wagon. It sounds like an interesting ride. If I'm not mistaken, I saw that car or one like it on Ebay several years ago. I do recall T-tops, 2-dr conversion, and narrowed and tucked bumpers. I don't remember if it was a Cutlass Cruiser or Pontiac lemans.
Please tell us more about it.

* Sorry to hijack your thread, Scott.

The carpet should be the same as far as the floor pan goes between 2, 4 and 5 door G-bodies.
Where you might have an issue is having enough extra carpet to fill the gap along the corners of the rear seat cushion.
On 2-doors this area isn't an issue since the 1/4 interior panels butt up to the seat, but on sedans and wagons, this area is exposed when the rear door is opened.
So make sure you don't cut your carpet too short!
