Got home from work and put it on ramps. I climbed under to check things over. The engine and trans is leaking everywhere. Bodys in nice shape no signs of damage. I removed the RH inner fender to remove the computer wiring and clean out the drain on the heater box. I got a really good look at someones handy work that had me laughing. I cannot believe the distributor cap is clocked on the distributor this way. The car runs really smooth. I think a house electrician got ahold of it too. Doubt it's up to code. Lol. Someone obviously was lost trying to mount the power steering pump. Gonna yank the engine/trans this weekend. Swapping trans and cleaning the engine. Going to put in all new seals. I pulled a valve cover off and it's clean inside. While the engines out, going to swap the engine bay wiring from my 86 that's not butchered up. I bought a new MSD HEI that I will use. Also putting in a cam/lifters, RPM Air Gap intake, and a brand new Holley 600

Bad fuse link, maybe?

I relocated all that up the inner fender and used a Ford starter relay to avoid baking all those wires on the wagon

I worked on this SS all day. The first few times I tried starting it, it done nothing. I then found the main battery cable melted to the header tube and the small post nut on the solenoid loose. I bumped the engine over to TDC and pulled the distributor. I threw away the mix match plug wires. I started investigating the main engine harness. A lot of stuff was hanging around the headers. The main engine harness was burnt to the header. They cut the wires at the starter post and ran them to the battery post. That's the custom red wires with the household wiring plastic twist nuts. I removed all that crap and put on new ends. I reattached them to the starter post. Got rid of all the computer wiring and plugs. I put on a new positive battery cable and new battery terminals. I reclocked the oil pump shaft and reset the distributor. Car fired right up. I also fixed a bad ground on the blower motor and got that working. I noticed on the drive home when I bought it, there were about 4 inches of steering wheel play. I found the rag joint had separated on one side. I swapped the shaft out with a Jeep shaft I had here. I then moved on to the windshield wipers. They are parked half way up the windshield. I turned on the ignition and probed the fuse. I got nothing on either side of the wiper fuse and the radio fuse. All the others are good. Not sure why at least one side is not hot with key on and wiper switch on. I removed the lower column panel and noticed a bunch of butt connectors on the steering column harness. This is where I stopped for the night. It had an old alarm system so I yanked it out. Think I'm going to pull the entire dash out to see what has been cut. Oh yeah, I also removed all the power steering bracket mayhem and reinstalled the brackets correctly with correct bolts and stud. Had to dump out 4 big boxes of engine hardware to find that damn stud with the nut half way on it. Lol

So after a week of messing with this car I found a small through rust spot in the front passenger floor pan about the size of a quarter. The heater box must be leaking because it's wet under the carpet. I found a one inch wide strip of through rust on the drivers side. It's about 6" long. Everything else is great. I ordered some short valve covers and a few odds and ends from Summit. I also just ordered new carpet from Rob at Dixie. Have to wait till next pay period to get some more parts. Hopefully there's no rain coming next weekend. Wanting to pull the engine/trans together. All the shift indicator linkage is gone but I found every piece in my shed. Got a lot of smalls cleaned and polished to swap out on the car. Also have everything gathered for the ac system. I'm just going to do a mechanical resto right now so I can drive it once in awhile to work. Entire front end is shot so I got new ball joints, idler arm, and a arm bushings. I also got Taylor braided brake hoses. This car's had a horrible life and hopefully I can turn it around. Wife's already said the other two SS' have to go. Got to swap out a bunch of parts before that can happen though.

A lot of times, they leak at the seam on top of the cowl...originally there was a sheet of plastic glued to the ends of the lower w/s molding to help direct water away. Over time the sealer dries out and cracks off, the plstic sheet crumbles away, then water runs in there.

I'm going to take a guess and say that the timing chain is not installed correctly being the distributor is clocked that way.

It actually looks like the cap installed wrong?

Have you followed the plug wires to see where they go?
