Jeep steering shaft

I had to notch the steering column shaft on mine to give enough room for the top pinch bolt. It isn't much of a notch at all and won't interfere with anything. It doesn't even go all the way through the metal, just enough to let the bolt pass.

I may be able to do it tonight after work. basically there are two shafts one that fits with very little persuasion and one that i belive won't work at all unless you bore out the upper clamp. as for the notching just like Outsider27 said it doesn't even go through the steering wheel shaft.just enough for the bolt to slide in without out galling the threads. If nobody has a pic i will post a pic of the shaft that works.I know on ebay they sell them but if you know what to look for for in the salvage yard its a really cheap upgrade...

Wow, quick replies!

So if I'm understanding this right, you are notching out the holes in the upper clamp of the jeep shaft so that the bolt will slide through, since the clamp has been spread a bit and the holes aren't lining up quite right? NOT notching the g-body steering column "stub"?

Bleh, I'm confused! Or at least I think I am. 😳

Anyways, look forward to your picture if it's not too much trouble...
I just want to see an end view of the upper clamp of the shaft that works with "little persuasion" as you put it. I saw one on another forum, but it was all shadowy and blurry... I couldn't really get an idea of what the inside of the upper end looks like. If you could get me a pic similar to the one you took of the aluminum ended one... that would be perfect!

Thanks!

You have to notch the steering column, not the Jeep shaft. Notch where the bolt would rest against the column shaft so the bolt clears. If my car wasn't under a cover and part of a snowbank, I'd take a pic.

Here's the pictures I have. Not sure if they'll help you any but I just happened to have my steering column and shaft out of the car.

These are before I pulled everything back apart to paint it.

There's either a manufacturing tolerance thats all over the place or some shafts must use a larger bolt than others because I didn't have to notch anything on mine to get it to fit properly. It literally was a bolt on deal.

In the first 3 pics that Andrew just posted. I did have to spread that clamp out a bit to get it on. It mis-aligned the 2 bolt holes ever so slightly. I took a hammer and gently pursuaded to bolt the rest of the way down so it would start in the other side of the clamp that was threaded. I know you're not supposed to hammer bolts thru but it was so slight it didn't even mar the bolt threads. Yeah, I pulled it back out to check it and it then went back in with just my bare fingers.

Andrew:

Thanks for the pics, they're very close to what I'm looking for, in the 2nd pic, if you tilt the clamp end up towards the camera 90 degrees, that is what I'm looking for.

Or maybe you could just tell me... is the inside of that end round, or double d? I had heard it was round...

Thanks again!

It's a double D on the inside. Kind of hard to take a picture of it since I painted it black. It looks round but on the inside there are two flat spots on each side, 90 degrees to the side with the pinch bolt.

Ahhhh... ok, I think I see the flats on inside, thanks a lot for the picture, Andrew!

I had read on another forum quite a while ago that the inside was round, and people were just clamping them onto the double d end of the steering column... which was concerning to me. Thanks for clearing that up!

I think i'll try to find one of these at the local wrecking yards if I can get it cheap enough.

Thanks a lot guys.
