I've seen it happen from Tornados so I believe. If it's been floating around for a bit first I've seen it.

I was in a wind class and they had a pine needle that went through a 2x4

And it illustrates the basic reason why people are told to shelter in an inner room with no windows or better still in the basement or storm shelter. A section of stud lumber or a tree limb going through a house wall is not just some motion picture special effect; any wind strong enough to lift a house off its foundations and drop it a neighborhood or two away can easily take a 2x6 and impale a house wall with it; or a tree for that matter.
