Someone hit my wife last year, they had no insurance. We're through Geico and Utah requires uninsured coverage. The car is a Daewoo with high mileage so we just have the basic coverage on it. Geico was great to work with, they covered the repairs and it didn't affect our insurance rates or record at all. You'll need a police report though.

Went into the store for about 5 min and when I came out there it was. I was told a brand new silver bmw with no tags and tinted windows did it. I've had this car for the last 10 years and its been in the family since brand new. I was really wanting to fix a few of the smaller dings on the car and then get a new paint job for it but after this I'm just hoping this can be fixed and not ruin my wallet

Sorry to see that. That dent looks a little too gnarly for a PDR person but hey, who knows. Were there any cameras in the parking lot of the store you were in? Or maybe neighboring stores? Wouldn't hurt to check.

While I agree that he should report this just in case, can you get an uninsured driver claim if you don't know who the driver was?

yes, you have to show you made an attempt at finding the driver but since the offending car had no plates it's virtually impossible to find the driver so they won't expect him to put much effort into it......this is the common practice but it may be different in his area.

2 witnesses saw, a fast food worker and the liquor store worker, neither have camera's for the parking lot. I flagged down a cop but since I was thinking I wasnt going to use insurance he made it seem pointless to wait around for him for an hour to write a report. Guess I will be calling them back and making a report. I'm in California so I should have uninsured motorist but I have no collision on the car so will they still fix it? Looks like im calling insurance also

'California Insurance Code Section 11580, mandates that every policy of auto insurance issued in the State of California must have uninsured motorist coverage in an amount as much or more than the overall limits. The only exception is if the insured person waives the coverage in writing and with very specific language. Therefore, unless a valid, signed waiver can be produced, the coverage should apply. It is still important, however, to make sure you haven’t signed such a release prior to an accident.

Finally, there is the case of the “hit and run”. California law says that as long as there was contact between your car and the hit and run driver’s vehicle, you filed a police report and you reported the accident to your insurance representative, you may recover damages including bodily injury through your UM policy provisions."

Cool. That's a handy little little piece of information to have.

It doesn't look too bad, however I'm not familiar with the way elkys are put together. seems like the damage was contained just to the lower section. How does the door jamb look? any signs of cracked paint ?

The way that my el camino is set up, you have a little bit of access behind that panel if you remove the door vent in the door frame, above the striker bolt. This would let you get a look at the back side of the damaged area and perhaps an arm in with a hammer, but since you have the damage right in the middle of a body line you may be better off getting a replacement quarter panel as it will be a ton of work trying to pull that straight again.

Having the witnesses that saw your el get hit should make it much easier to file a police report. Then contact your insurance company and hopefully with the police report you should have no issues filing a claim to get it fixed.

A friend of mine Paula who use to live here had moved to Northern California came out of work one day and found someone had hit her back door on the drivers side. Luckily it stayed closed but it had a huge dent from most likely someone backing into it. She had no witnesses but she took cell phone pics, called the police, filed a report. As pontiacgp wrote above she was covered by the unisured motorist provision. As far as I recall she had no issues with her insurance and did get the door fixed and her insurance rates did not skyrocket.
