I'm in the process of restoring some cheap Flotech headers. They are rusty around the collector and bottoms of the tubes where the weather got to them.

I'm limited in tools to a drill and wire buffing bit. I've spent a few hours stripping the rust, but it's very tough getting inbetween the tubes and tight spots. I've got quotes for sandblasting, for $150 minimum. But at that price, might as well buy new ones.

a few months back, I remember reading in G-Body_Vet 's build thread, how he used the KBS Rust Blast to remove rust and restore his inner fenders.

do you think this product could help take off some of the surface rust from these headers? Anyone know if this is available in Canada?

The problem with headers is that you can coat them on the outside to prevent them from rusting but they actually rust out from the inside out. That's why the expensive ones are coated inside and out...

to remove the rust I used this method and it does work...it would get in the areas you can't get to

electrolysis is another technique I explored. I actually found lots of handy videos on it online.

I'm dealing with limited space in the garage. Plus, living in a condo, questions are raised when people see me conducting chemistry experiments outside, lol. I also went out to look for a large bucket or tub that I could submerge the headers into, and didn't have much luck under $80.

also, from most of the video examples, wait times are upwards of a week, unless you're using a strong acid.

this is why I'm intrigued by this rust blast stuff. I could do this in the small backyard I have, without too many people asking questions. I found their Canadian distributor and called the rep (located in Toronto). Says it's $16 for a qrt size bottle, comes with a squirt bottle, and he said he's done his manifolds with this stuff in under an hour. And they have a whole line of high heat paints, with a better heat rating than VHT header paint.

... so I'm thinkin, $17 for a bottle of RustBlast + $19 (x2) for a couple cans of their paint + $9 shipping = $64 for decently restored headers.

that puts me about 1/3 rd of the price of new Flotech's (which would be about $180 by the time they get to my door)

I use one of the big storage containers from CT, they're about $15..and then there is always the bath tub..

What a bout a standard 55 gallon trash can  20 gallons of "aluminum brite" (hydrofloric acid) mixed 1:1 with water as recommended, and be good to go
