Knocking

If you contact the seller and ask him to come to listen to the engine and he declines or he comes over and denies he sold you a bad engine then you can always sue him.Your small claims court's jurisdiction limit is $8,000. If you start an action for the price you paid for the engine, the time and money you spent on transportation of the engine and installation he may be willing to discuss a solution.

That's an option I guess. Don't really like dealing with the justice system though.

He said it wasn't fully broken in and that it only had 1000 miles on it. The engine was very clean and turned super smooth by hand. The one thing I didn't think to do was check for play on the rods.
It doesn't sound like rods to me .....I could be wrong tho

So what do think would make it start knocking when I pulled the plug wire?
Very good question I think an Autopsy is in order all of the previous suggestions are very good ones rockers hitting retainer flex plate (don't matter it's new) valve to piston check the easy first working your way deeper

Anything is possible my buddy Jay put a new aftermarket flexplate in his trailblazer and it cracked before he got home because a bushing in the trans was bad

I once bought an Olds 98 with a 455 engine for next to nothing after the owner had a new trans put in and it started knocking after that, I got it home and put it up on ramps and realized that the torque converter bolts even though they were tight were about a 1/8" too long so they bottomed out before snugging up the converter creating a knocking that sounded very much like a rod knock.
So yes anything is possible.
