See it the flex plate cracked.
Check for bent pushrods.
Try and pinpoint noise using stethoscope or screwdriver handle it doesn't sound like a rod to me unless the Bering spun and overlapped I've seen that happen and the piston was hitting the head. Nasty sound!
 
Check torque converter bolts. Back in H.S. my dads Firebird had what he thought was rod knock & ended up being loose bolts letting the converer bang around.

I actually did go out and buy a stethoscope. It's not really loud listening to the pan. It's loudest placing the probe on the brass plugs on the exhaust manifolds. the first and second ones on passenger side specifically. sounds almost like something is rattling. I can hear it pretty clear on #6 intake runner also. I replaced flexplate and starter. Also removed fuel pump and started it to make sure it wasn't the pushrod.
 
I was told it could be the scorpion rockers and to swap some stock ones on and see if the noise goes away. i'll be trying that also, but that doesn't explain what's going on with #6.
